AVM FRITZ!WLAN Mesh Repeater 2400

If the internet is once again too slow in your own four walls, this does not necessarily have to be due to the WLAN router. Especially in large apartments or houses Router also simply be too far away from the receiving device - which means that a perfect connection is not established and the surfing speed suffers massively. The solution to this problem is a so-called mesh repeater, which massively extends the range of the WiFi signal and thus extends to the furthest corners of the apartment. A popular model, which we would like to present to you in more detail in our following test report, is the FRITZ!WLAN Mesh Repeater 2400 from AVM.

The functions of the AVM FRITZ!WLAN Mesh Repeater 2400 at a glance

With the AVM FRITZ!WLAN Mesh Repeater 2400 you can increase the range of the wireless network in a very short time. It has two radio units (WLAN AC, WLAN N) and is therefore able to provide all devices logged into the WLAN with excellent Internet speed and a stable connection.
Thanks to an automatic band selection, the repeater always chooses the currently most effective connection with the router, so that the currently best data rate can be used without additional settings or selections. In this way, several people in a household can surf the Internet, play games or watch videos via streaming at the same time on their stationary and mobile devices at optimum speed.

The AVM FRITZ!WLAN Mesh Repeater 2400 offers these advantages

  • Extremely fast transmissions through WLAN AC with up to 1.733 MBit/s MBit/s and WLAN N with up to 600 MBit/s
  • Automatic merging of all FRITZ! devices used into an intelligent network
  • Alternatively, also compatible with almost all other common WLAN routers
  • From the factory with a secure WLANEncryption fitted
  • User-friendly WLAN setup at the push of a button via WPS
  • Gigabit LAN connection to set up a LAN bridge
  • Consumes comparatively little electricity

Setting up the AVM FRITZ!WLAN Mesh Repeater 2400

If you have never used a Mesh Repeater before, with the AVM FRITZ!WLAN Mesh Repeater 2400 you don't have to worry that the setup could be complicated in any way, because exactly the opposite is the case. The device is simply plugged into a free socket in the immediate vicinity of the WLAN router. Then press the red button labeled “Connect” briefly. Once this is done, press the white Connect button on the FRITZ! Box within the next two minutes. Both devices will now start blinking. As soon as the LEDs light up continuously, the repeater and the router have connected to each other.
Now the repeater can be removed from the socket and plugged into its final place of use - this is ideally in the middle between the router and the devices to be supplied.

Of course, the Mesh Repeater 2400 not only works in combination with a FRITZ! Box, because alternatively it can also be used with almost any other common wireless router that supports the wireless standards 802.11 ac/n/g/b/a. However, there are definitely advantages when the device is paired with a FRITZ! Box: If desired, important information such as the network name and the WPA2 security key can be automatically adopted during the connection. So you don't have to look for your password first, which is slumbering in a drawer on some welcome letter, but can get started immediately - a clear plus point from our point of view.

Also interesting is the fact that the AVM FRITZ!WLAN Mesh Repeater 2400 can not only establish connections to the respective end devices via WLAN, but can also set up a bridge via a LAN connection. The connection in question is on the underside of the repeater, and a corresponding LAN cable is included in the scope of delivery. Unfortunately, there is only one LAN port on board, so you have to decide which device should be connected here.

The AVM FRITZ!WLAN Mesh Repeater 2400 in a practical test

Of course, it is particularly important for a WiFi repeater that it can also deliver the promised transmission speeds. We remember: AVM specifies up to 1.733 MBit/s for WLAN AC, but for WLAN N it is still a very strong 600 MBit/s. In our practical test, we were not able to fully confirm these values, but it would actually be a small miracle - because as a buyer you always have to expect certain compromises. In fact, we were able to measure around 2400 Mbit/s when sending and 780 Mbit/s when receiving via WLAN AC with the AVM FRITZ!WLAN Mesh Repeater 660. This may sound like a much worse result at first, but it is actually a really good result. For comparison: The approximately 20 euros cheaper AVM FRITZ!WLAN Mesh Repeater 1200, for which we have also written a test report for you here on our homepage, it “only” achieves a maximum of 650 MBit/s or 580 MBit/s.

In the WLAN N standard, the test results were (unsurprisingly) much more manageable: Here the Mesh Repeater 2400 only managed around 370 Mbit/s when receiving and 305 Mbit/s when sending. This result is only slightly better than the Mesh Repeater 1200, so that one can only speak of a good, but not spectacular value. It should also be noted that the values given here are only average values that cannot necessarily be achieved in every household due to a wide variety of circumstances - but this is of course not the fault of the repeater itself.

The power consumption of the AVM FRITZ!WLAN Mesh Repeater 2400

The AVM shows itself in terms of its power consumption FRITZ!WLAN Mesh Repeater 1200 From its positive side: In stand-by mode, the consumption is an exemplary 3 watts, with low to medium load it is around 3,8 watts. In order for the maximum value of around 4,3 watts to appear, you would have to surf the net with many devices at the same time - and even in this case the power consumption is still comparatively low.

And finally ...

If you are of the opinion that the AVM FRITZ!WLAN Mesh Repeater 1200 has a transmission speed that is too low, you should definitely use the slightly more expensive model 2400, which even easily outshines its predecessor, the 1750E. In addition to its exemplary speed via WLAN AC and WLAN N, we were also impressed by the very simple setup of the repeater and the alternative creation of a bridge via LAN connection.
From our side, there is a very clear purchase recommendation for the AVM FRITZ!WLAN Mesh Repeater 2400.
