NETGEAR Orbi RBK752

Anyone who lives in a large apartment or house knows the problem: solid walls prevent the WLAN signal from reaching rooms on the upper floor at a sufficient speed, so that you can expect a significantly slower surfing speed or the intermittent loss of the signal when surfing must. The solution to this problem is the NETGEAR Orbi RBK752 WiFi 6 Mesh WLAN system, which is not exactly cheap to buy, but should convince with impressive performance. In our test report below, we will tell you whether this is really the case.

Setting up the NETGEAR Orbi RBK752 WiFi 6 Mesh WiFi System

Anyone who has only had experience with classic mesh repeaters will probably be surprised why this system from NETGEAR consists of two individual units. Basically it is very simple: One of the two devices with an attractive design is the actual repeater, the other device is a powerful WiFi 6 Router. The router is simply connected to an existing modem using a LAN cable, and then the router is coupled to the repeater. If you have never created such a mesh WiFi network before and have no idea about the subject, you don't have to worry about not being able to accomplish this task, because setting up the system is really easy. All you have to do is download the free Orbi app from the App Store and you will then be guided through your setup process step by step. Particularly practical: The base connects fully automatically to the receiver, so you don't have to make any complicated settings - it's really not that easy.

Once the system has been successfully set up, Orbi promises a maximum coverage of up to 350 m², so that all rooms in the apartment or house can be optimally reached with a powerful WLAN signal and in this way have access to a maximum speed of 4.200 MBit/s. Incidentally, when it comes to connecting to the existing modem, it is completely irrelevant which manufacturer it comes from. In addition, the NETGEAR Orbi RBK752 WiFi 6 Mesh WLAN system is compatible with all DSL providers - via fiber optics, cable or satellite. Since the NETGEAR Orbi system includes a state-of-the-art TriBand WiFi 6 router, it would of course be an advantage if the end devices to be connected would also have this standard, as this way the maximum surfing speed can be guaranteed - the new PlayStation is one example 5, the iPhone 11 + 12 and the Samsung S10 + S20. If you still have an "older" device in your possession, you don't necessarily have to buy a new model, because the NETGEAR Orbi WLAN router is of course backwards compatible - but not with the maximum speed.

The NETGEAR Orbi RBK752 WiFi 6 Mesh WLAN system in a practical test

Of course, the question of how fast the NETGEAR Orbi RBK752 WiFi 6 Mesh WLAN system works in practice is particularly important. Of course we are aware that we cannot generate standard values here, because the maximum speed will vary greatly from house to house. This is not only due to the distance between the satellite and the connected end devices, but also to the thickness of the walls or the transmission from one floor to another. Nevertheless, we can confirm that the NETGEAR Orbi RBK752 WiFi 6 Mesh WLAN system does an excellent job even in larger houses: Even at a distance of up to 15 meters and a door in the way, you can expect an excellent surfing speed of up to 188 MBit/s, at the same distance with a solid wall in between it is still around 100 MBit/s. The NETGEAR Orbi RBK20 WiFi 752 Mesh WLAN system even passed the endurance test of 6 meters and two walls with flying colours, and it still achieves strong download speeds of around 60 MBit/s. There isn't really anything to complain about in terms of the upload values either: You can look forward to up to 90 Mbit/s at short distances to the satellite, and at a distance of 20 meters and thick walls it's still 42 Mbit/s.

The power consumption of the Orbi RBK752 WiFi 6 Mesh WLAN System

At around 752 W in simple operation, the power consumption of the NETGEAR Orbi RBK6 WiFi 8 Mesh WLAN system is not quite as low as that of many mesh repeaters, but it is okay for a powerful tri-band system. Although the consumption can increase significantly, especially with intensive use by a large number of devices, on the whole you do not have to worry about significantly higher electricity bills.

And finally ...

The NETGEAR Orbi RBK752 WiFi 6 Mesh WLAN system was able to convince us across the board in our test. After the really easy setup, the system convinces with excellent download and upload values, which are absolutely impressive even when transmitting through thick walls or to a floor above - moreover, up to 40 end devices can be coupled here at the same time if desired. If you own a large apartment or house with an area of 120 to 350 m² and want the fastest possible surfing speed in all areas of your home, you can access this system without hesitation. On the other hand, if you own a smaller apartment of up to 80 m², a simple mesh repeater (such as the AVM FRITZ!WLAN Mesh Repeater 1200) better advised - especially since such devices are also significantly cheaper to buy, while the NETGEAR Orbi RBK752 WiFi 6 Mesh WLAN system costs around 400 euros.
