Gaming Laptop – The little brother of the PC?

In the past, many people made a little fun of the gaming laptop. Most gamers were of the opinion that real gaming requires a real PC. However, this is only because laptops used to be able to perform significantly less and were of inferior quality. It just wasn't that fun to play with. However, it is absolutely possible for modern laptops to compete with the capabilities of a desktop PC. That shows from this PC laptop consoles comparison.

Computer games are becoming increasingly complex in today's generation. This is not only related to the content, but above all to the graphics and quality. This also means that they demand a lot more from the hardware than before. More memory, smooth images and a high resolution - all of this suddenly becomes important. And a gaming notebook should of course meet these requirements for a long time so that a new one does not have to be bought immediately.

Before you buy, it is very important to get enough information. There is one main reason for this: In contrast to a desktop PC, the hardware of a laptop is very difficult to upgrade and change. If something breaks on the screen, it can no longer be replaced and a new gaming notebook is needed. It is probably best if you try different models beforehand. In many technology shops this is possible without any problems.

What is the difference between a regular laptop and a gaming laptop?

In principle, a gaming laptop can also be configured as a business laptop. However, various components (the graphics card, for example) are extremely high-quality and powerful - just designed for gaming. So if you now use your gaming notebook as a business notebook, many of the system's resources remain unused. On the other hand, you won't be able to use a business laptop for gaming because it simply wasn't designed for these requirements.

How much will a good gaming laptop cost me?

You can get inexpensive entry-level models from around 630 euros, but you clearly have to accept compromises in terms of equipment and performance. For a powerful gaming notebook, you should expect costs of 1000 to 3000 euros.

Which gaming notebook do I need for my needs?

The choice of your gaming notebook depends on how big your gaming consumption is. If you only belong to the casual gamers who prefer a game in between to a long gaming session, then you can confidently do without various components. For example on a high-end graphics card or on a high-performance processor. This group of gamers can save the most when buying a gaming notebook. The hardcore gamer, on the other hand, mainly uses his laptop for gaming.

As a business laptop, it uses a different model. For this gamer, only an excellent, latest-generation graphics card will do Housing come. However, this type of gamer can save a few euros on the processor, because a powerful i5 processor provides enough power. it can also be worthwhile for this gambler to look around for the large and heavy models. There is often a lower price here than for the ultra-flat models. Furthermore, the price of a gaming laptop can of course also decide whether to buy or not to buy it. You can already get a suitable gaming notebook for around 600 to 700 euros.

But of course you have to accept compromises in terms of equipment and performance. Most of the time, the manufacturers make compromises in terms of the hardware, or they concentrate on the essentials and this is how such a low price comes about. Furthermore, you can also use your gaming laptop as a “go-to-all”. You would like to use all conventional Office applications, as well as an image or video editing program from time to time. Here you should not just focus on one good graphics card but also don't ignore the processor.

Therefore, this all-rounder laptop should have an i7 processor. However, if you want to use your gaming laptop for most mobile purposes, you must pay attention to the weight of the notebook. Here it would not be very helpful to choose a large, heavy model. In the meantime there are quite powerful gaming laptops with a weight of around 2kg. These find space everywhere and the low weight makes them the perfect companion on all paths. You should also choose a smaller screen for the mobile version, rather a 15 inch than a 17 inch one.

Buy a gaming laptop? You should note that!

The first question: What is important to me?

At the very beginning you have to clarify a few questions. The most important thing for you is to find out what you need and what is most important to you before you buy. It doesn't just make a difference when and where you play. Above all, it depends on how often you gamble and what expectations you have of the gaming laptop.

Many people only play occasionally and want a computer game to run smoothly in addition to the Internet and streaming. A high-end graphics card is too much here - due to the size of the screen, the difference in quality is hardly noticeable. Instead, you can very well rely on a GTX 1650. You can also save a lot on the CPU because you don't need too much power.

However, if you want to use your new laptop almost exclusively for games, you should definitely rely on a strong graphics card. Because mobility is usually of secondary importance with such requirements, large models are also suitable. These are often not as expensive as their flatter-cut brethren. An i5 CPU is sufficient as the main processor, through which games can run without wobbling.

Are you looking for a gaming notebook as an all-rounder that you can both play with and work with? Then high speed plays a major role and your laptop needs enough power to run different tasks at the same time. An i7 main processor is well suited here, as Gameforest's laptop comparison shows. However, if you travel a lot, the focus is probably on a slim and light model.

Important for gamers: the right screen

The screen is of course very important for the optics and a pleasant gaming experience. With a gaming laptop, the display is usually 15 or 17 inches in size. The former is often a little cheaper, and a 17-inch display isn't even necessary for casual gamers. However, the focus of the screen should not be on the size, but on the refresh rate.

The refresh rate is measured in Hertz and indicates how many frames your gaming notebook can display per second. The fact that the rate is particularly high must be ensured, especially in shooter games. Here it can happen that the images blur and shake when the mouse moves quickly if the refresh rate is not high enough.

Many people believe that the resolution is essential for gaming - but there are good savings to be made here. The Full HD resolution with 1920×1080 pixels is usually sufficient, the popular 4K is usually not even noticeable on laptops. Rather, you should strive for a glossy display that provides a better look. However, it is also possible that it dazzles when there is too much light. Ideally, you should try both beforehand and see for yourself which you like better.

Specifications: memory, graphics card and ports

The graphics processor is of great importance for your new gaming laptop. It should definitely be installed separately and under no circumstances in the main processor. This is because a graphics processor built into the CPU often does not provide enough performance for smooth games. Plus, it's almost impossible to swap out or upgrade.

It is also best to opt for an SSD hard drive. This scores with very high speed and built-in cache. In these, the laptop can move frequently used programs so that they load faster and run more smoothly. On external hard drives you prefer not to, because they are often slower.

Laptop speed is determined by RAM. It determines how fast your gaming notebook can process data. Nowadays, a good model should have at least six gigabytes of RAM in order to be able to provide sufficient performance.

In addition to a LAN connection, your gaming laptop also needs at least two USB ports so that you can connect a mouse and keyboard. It makes sense if the connections belong to the 3.0 generation. Of course, you still need a CD drive for the computer games themselves – because not everyone wants to buy their games online.

Gaming laptop test: our verdict

If you pay attention to a few things when buying a gaming laptop, you can buy a very good device at a very reasonable price. It is best to think in advance how you want to use your new gaming notebook and what its task will be. Depending on this, you then focus on the features you want.

Just make sure that a very good graphics card is installed so that you can enjoy all games optimally if you mainly want to use your laptop for gaming.
