Modern and serious

The WD MyPassport SSD comes in a two-piece design. The upper side is matt black and bears the WD logo. The lower half is silver and features highlighted stripes. This feels valuable and gives the device a modern and at the same time serious look. It should be mentioned that the device is made entirely of plastic.

The pleasantly cool feeling of Samsung Portable SSD T5 So the WD My Passport SSD cannot offer that. However, the weight of only 41 grams results from the choice of materials. This makes the WD SSD the lightest external hard drive in the test. At the same time, the device with dimensions of 9 x 4,5 x 1 centimeters is the second smallest device in comparison.

Samsung on their heels

We use the free CrystalDiskMark program to check the hard disk speeds. In the sequential performance test, the Western Digital My Passport SSD achieves the best values in comparison with the Samsung T5. With 508,4 MB/s reading and 511,3 MB/s writing, the Western Digital SSD is clearly above the mechanical competition. For comparison, the Transcend StoreJet 25MC here only values in the range of 120 MB/s. File transfers are therefore significantly faster with the WD hard drive.

And the flash memory of the SSD is also impressive when it comes to access times. At 1,26 milliseconds, the external hard drive is just behind Samsung's device in second place, again well ahead of the other competitors.

Cheaper alternative

All these advantages in terms of speed also come at a price with the WD My Passport SSD. Buyers have to pay €0,359 per gigabyte. That's almost 15 cents less than the Samsung T5, but significantly more than the 6 cents of the mechanical hard drives. Neither significantly more capacity required can benefit from the volume discount. With the 1 terabyte version of the device, interested parties only pay 31 cents per gigabyte. So it might be worth buying more.

Conclusion on the WD My Passport SSD

The WD My Passport SSD offers decent software, very good performance and great workmanship. At the same time, it is slightly cheaper than Samsung's SSD. Thanks to the flash memory, the device is far faster than the mechanical competition. In our comparison, however, it is neither enough for the test win nor for a price-performance title. We recommend the Western Digital SSD for buyers who want the performance of the Samsung T5 but would like to save some money. In terms of processing, Western Digital loses points here. For most users, however, the My Passport SSD should be the right device.
