Transcend StoreJet 25MC

The Taiwanese company Transcend was founded in 1988. In 2009 the company published as one of the first manufacturer an external SSD. But today we are dealing with a classic, external HDD from the Taiwanese, the Transcend StoreJet 25MC. You can find out whether the shock-resistant device is also suitable for everyday use in our external hard drive test.

Protected against falls throughout the day

The Transcend StoreJet 25MC is completely rubberized. This obviously doesn't feel as high-quality as, for example, the Samsung SSD with its metal casing. Our variant of the StoreJet comes with a USB-C cable and in an olive green color with a bright green accent stripe that runs around the device.

This silicone strip helps to implement the advertised shock resistance. Transcend advertises that it meets US military standards and speaks of triple protection. In addition to the outer shell, this includes a robust hard drive housing and an internal suspension system. In case of doubt, this can help to save a data loss. At the same time, the precautionary measures also have disadvantages. At 25 grams, the Transcend StoreJet 206MC is the heaviest and, at 13 x 8 x 1,7 centimeters, the largest device in the test. In addition to that, we are a bit confused by the color choice of the Taiwanese. Our green model comes with a blue LED ring. This could at least have been exchanged for a white light, because the contrast is enormous.

Impressive access times

We use the CrystalDiskMark tool to check the transfer rates of the external hard drives. In terms of reading and writing speed, the Transcend StoreJet 25MC is in the midfield of HDDs. With 126,7 MB/s reading and 119,1 MB/s writing, it surpasses the Seagate Backup Plus Slim by almost 35%. The Toshiba Canvio Basics achieved transfer rates of 149,7 MB/s and 153,9 MB/s in the same test. The two SSDs are, unsurprisingly, well ahead of the HDD with almost 510 MB/s in reading and writing.

The access times of the Transcend StoreJet 25MC were impressive. Apparently, the USB-C port of the device helps to reduce the latency significantly. At 3 milliseconds, the device is very close to the Samsung Portable SSD T5 with 1,07 ms and the WD My Passport SSD at 1,26ms. The other two HDDs are clearly behind with 24 ms each.

Price middle way

The Transcend StoreJet 25MC also shows that HDDs are generally cheaper than solid state drives. StoreJet buyers pay 6,8 cents per gigabyte. This is slightly more expensive than the other two mechanical hard drives, but significantly cheaper than the SSDs. If you buy the version without USB-C and with two terabytes of capacity, you only pay €0,043.

Conclusion on the Transcend StoreJet 25MC

The Transcend StoreJet 25MC is a decent external hard drive that suits buyers with a weak grip with its shock resistance. As a result, however, she loses points in terms of mobility. The transfer speeds are mediocre and the access times are very good. The new USB-C port ensures future-proof storage that should survive one or the other fall. For all those who are careful with their technology, this is coming Toshiba Canvio Basics probably more in question. All those who want more power, such as the Samsung Portable or the WD MyPassport SSD to grab.
