Toshiba Canvio Basics

The Japanese manufacturer Toshiba is one of the largest memory manufacturers in the world. The NAND division in particular is one of them most profitable parts the company. In 2017 it became known that the tech giant suffered a huge loss of 4,8 billion euros due to the insolvency of a subsidiary. The future of the company is therefore uncertain. So as long as there are still Toshiba devices, we'll test them Toshiba Canvio Basics and check what the external hard drive has on it.

The first impression is deceptive

The Toshiba Canvio Basics is by far the least attractive device in comparison. One could argue that the Canvio Basics at least has a relatively neutral appearance. The device comes in a matte black plastic look with just a blue status LED on the lower top. On the underside there are rubber feet to guarantee slip resistance. With dimensions of 11,9 x 7,9 x 1,5 centimeters and a weight of 126 grams, the Canvio Basics is mediocre in both aspects. Accordingly, the mobility of the device is mediocre. However, most users should have no problem using the Toshiba Canvio Basics on the go. The supplied USB 3.0 cable is 47 centimeters long.

The one-eyed man among the blind

In our speed test, we use the CrystalDiskMark program to check the read and write speeds of the external hard drives. The Toshiba Canvio Basics was able to achieve the highest performance values of the external hard disk drives and therefore ranked third with 149,7 MB/s reading and 153,9 MB/s writing. These are decent values between 25 and 30 MB/s over the Transcend StoreJet 25MC lie. Most users should be perfectly happy with that. However, the Toshiba Canvio Basics lags far behind the SSDs in the test.

In terms of access speed, the Canvio is somewhat disappointing at 23,53 milliseconds. She is fourth here, just ahead of the Seagate Backup Plus Slim. The value is almost 20 times higher than that of solid state drives. Despite this, we believe that the Toshiba Canvio Basics will be sufficient for most users. In terms of performance, it does Toshiba hard drive so ready to become our price-performance winner.

A bargain

This fact is confirmed by the fact that the Toshiba Canvio Basics is the cheapest device in our comparison and offers the best price per gigabyte ratio. At €0,047 per GB, the device is a good one cent ahead of the direct competition and far ahead of the SSDs. If you buy the largest capacity of 3 terabytes, you can get the gigabyte for just under 3 cents. Anyone who needs capacity is in good hands with the Toshiba Canvio Basics.

Conclusion on the Toshiba Canvio Basics

The Toshiba Canvio Basics isn't exactly pretty and doesn't use high-quality materials. The device is, as the name suggests, the basic version of an external hard drive. However, Toshiba pays attention to good performance rates, which at least surpass the direct competition in terms of speed. The access time is relatively high, which shouldn't bother most users in the intended use. Due to the particularly low acquisition costs, the Canvio Basics is quite interesting. After all, users can buy 3 terabytes of capacity for the approximate price of a 250 GB SSD. For us, the matter is therefore clear: of course, the Toshiba Canvio Basics as an HDD cannot keep up with the SSDs. For a narrow price-performance victory before the WD But my Passport SSD is enough. If you don't want to spend too much money and don't attach great importance to the design, you have to go for the Toshiba hard drive.
