HyperX Cloud Revolver S

HyperX is the gaming division of the US memory manufacturer Kingston. Through clever marketing and close contact to e-sports, HyperX make a name relatively quickly. You can find out in our review whether the Cloud Revolver S can meet the professional requirements.

Stylish and stable

The Cloud Revolver S comes in a black plastic look with white accents on the headphones. The headband and the ear cups are made of leather. It hardly got warm in the test and could still be worn comfortably for hours. The headset sizing follows a similar approach to the Audio-Technica. However, HyperX does without the "3D wings" and thus remains a bit more serious. But the system works just as well.

The HyperX is the heaviest at 372 grams Gaming Headset in our comparison. The Microphone of the Cloud Revolver S is a bit more flexible than, for example, that of the Sennheiser GSP 350. A little more would have helped with more precise positioning. It is practical that the microphone can be removed. Theoretically, you could then easily take the HyperX with you on trips as headphones. We found the orientation of the included ones a bit strange sound card. In our opinion, this is the wrong way around. Of course that depends on how you reach for the sound card, but we feel the other manufacturers are on our side. Other than that, we really like the map. At the top left are three saved profiles that the user can choose from: Bass Boost, Flat and Vocal. The buttons for surround sound and mute are in the middle. On the right, the volume and the microphone can be adjusted using wheels. So overall very comfortable and well resolved.

Like the big ones

In terms of sound, we are satisfied with the HyperX Cloud Revolver S. In fact, it's the only headset that we didn't put through the equalizer. This is perhaps also due to the fact that it is a bit quiet. Incidentally, the impact of the profiles mentioned above is rather marginal. The surround sound is okay. The headset is closed and therefore insulated. The insulation is a bit more aggressive than the other devices in comparison. Anyone who cares should take note of this. By the way, the HyperX Cloud Revolver S comes without drivers and also works with all consoles.

Communication problems

When manufacturers try to certify that their product has an e-sports focus, I personally think of the highest quality in all respects. The more competitive you play, the less willing you are to make hardware restrictions. HyperX consistently advertises with pro gamers and streamers. It begs the question, why then does the HyperX Cloud Revolver S's microphone sound like an 80's phone? We think we've figured out why.

This sound test was recorded with the included HyperX USB sound card. The voice sounds dull and unnatural. The S sounds are sharp and slight pops can be heard. You can only be satisfied when it comes to ambient noise. Almost no noise was recorded.

This recording was captured using our ASUS internal sound card. You can clearly hear hissing, but the voice sounds more natural and less dull. The pop sounds are still there, the S's are a little less pronounced. We suspect that HyperX uses digital noise reduction in the included sound card that works so aggressively that it ruins the rest of the recording. That might be enough for some people, but not for us.

Priced a bit too high

For just under €140, HyperX would have to add at least a few things to make the Cloud Revolver S a good deal. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Apart from the sound card, nothing else comes with the headset. Overall, we would advise against the HyperX Cloud Revolver S. The headset sounds good, it's comfortable, and it's well made. The microphone, however, is the weakest in comparison and the price is too high for the equipment on offer. A better alternative would be the Logitech G433.
