Can Microsoft Edge convince?

Microsoft Edge on Surface device

It's been a good six months since Windows 10 was released. As a balance to date, one remarkable result remains: no other operating system of the software giant has spread as fast as Windows 10. With the new software came the successor to the spurned Internet Explorer, which had to stand up to a lot of jokes and negative comparisons with Firefox, Safari & Co. With the new Creators update Redstone 2, about which we already reported, should now also the new Explorer to be fine-tuned. It's already miles ahead of its predecessor and the new features sound promising.

Caught up and outdated?

Honestly, one has to say that the surfing offer from Microsoft lagged far behind the competition. For example, there was no tab preview for a long time or you could not switch directly to private mode. Microsoft Edge has learned from these mistakes. All open tabs can now be seen above the URL bar and private mode can be accessed by right-clicking on the Edge icon. But so far Mozilla's Firefox or Apple's Safari should still smile about it, after all these functions have been available in both browsers for a long time.

But even without the upcoming major update from Microsoft, Edge already has functions that the competition will first have to retrofit. A great feature is, for example, transferring videos, music or pictures to televisions via Miracast and DLNA. Unfortunately, this process is not possible with protected content such as Netflix or Amazon Prime.

Pure energy efficiency

In 2016, Microsoft made a declaration of war and released a video showing screens with different web browsers. Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Opera faced an endurance test with so-called "binge watching", playing a series of series without interruption. While all devices gradually lost energy, the PC with Microsoft Edge ran significantly longer. Computer Bild tested what could be labeled as a marketing idea in its own test and confirmed the impressive result.

Adapted to the new interface of Windows 10 and with incomparable energy efficiency, the new web browser from the Bill Gates company is actually competitive and no longer lagged behind like its predecessor. Useful functions had to be copied first, but after these deficits were made up, Microsoft sets innovative trends, who would have thought that in this area.
