Atari dares again

Atari released a teaser for a new console back in June. The so-called Ataribox is said to have been in development for years and in two different designs appear. In addition to retro classics, new games should also run on the console.

Atari's story

Atari has been gone for years. In November 1994, the company released its last console, the Atari Jaguar. Despite decent specifications, the device only sold about 300.000 units and is considered a flop that sealed the end of Atari's independence. The biggest mistake the Americans made at the time was the weak game line-up when the console was released. The planned successor Jaguar 2 could never be published due to the existing financial problems. In 1996 Atari merged with hard drive manufacturer Jugi Tandon Storage. After the company's trademark rights were sold off, the company finally became a publisher. Atari's most notable releases in recent years include Eve Online Fahrenheit and the first two offshoots of the Witcher series, The Witcher and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

Real competition or lover's frills

So, after years of mismanagement, is the big coup coming? Even long-established Atari fanboys don't believe in that. A serious competitor for Microsoft and Sony is not expected. Nintendo is anyway in an unattainable height due to the exemplary marketing of their own classics. The Ataribox is expected to take a similar approach to the Nintendo Classic Mini. Reproducing old classics with the latest technology. However, Atari emphasizes that new games will also be playable on the console. Those who think of Call of Duty and BioWare's new IP Anthem will surely be disappointed. It is expected that the Ataribox will offer mini-games. This is reminiscent of the failed Ouya, but could work due to the traction of the classics.

The exact specifications have been kept silent so far. only one HDMI Connection, four USB ports and an SD card slot should be available. In addition, the console will be available in two different designs, one in black and one in wood look.
