Avoid the summer slump

True Detective intro sequence

Normally the summer time can be bridged quite well with the holidays. For all those of you who are still too much have free time and boredom, this article contains my very personal film, series and special recommendations.

No-Brainer and new releases ahead

First the films and series that everyone has already seen. If you already have gaps here, you might want to reconsider your upcoming vacation and extend your Netflix subscription. Therefore, in fast forward...

Movies: The Dark Knight, Psycho, Inception, The Godfather, Interstellar, The Truman Show, Being John Malkovich, Pulp Fiction, Matrix, Seven, Gladiator, Django Unchained.

Series: Breaking Bad, Sherlock, Game of Thrones, Fargo, The Wire.

Also new in cinemas or coming soon are:

  • Dunkirk

The new one by Nolan surprises with a new approach to war films. Hardly any new release calls for IMAX more, because the sound design is an essential part of the film. Absolutely worth seeing.

  • The Dark Tower

It's already being torn up on Metacritic, but it actually looks promising. Nothing can go wrong with Matthew McConaughey as the man in black. Releases on August 10th.

  • Killer's Bodyguard

With Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L Jackson. Looks like classic popcorn cinema and sure to entertain. In theaters August 31st.

My personal recommendations

First of all, I would like to add the rest of the Nolan trilogy to the no-brainer “The Dark Knight”. Like The Dark Knight Rises, Batman Begins is an impressively good film. For all those who are looking for more good superhero films I would like to recommend "Watchmen - The Guardians". Doesn't come off extremely well in any rating, but I was personally entertained. With a slight superhero reference but above all ingenious technology, “Birdman” by Alejandro González Iñárritu, who incidentally also directed Leo's Oscar debut The Revenant, is convincing. Who, like me, would have presented Leo with an Oscar much earlier should watch "The Departed", "Catch Me If You Can" and "Shutter Island". If the latter isn't dark enough for you, you have to travel back to the beginnings of Jake Gyllenhaal and watch "Donnie Darko". But please the Director's Cut, it contains important information to understand the story. If you're at it, you can also give "Nightcrawler" a chance.

After that, you'll need a little encouragement. A belated no-brainer here is of course Louis CK, preferably “Hilarious”. Anyone who already knows him and is looking for something similar should look at Bill Burr's "You People Are All The Same" or Anthony Jeselnik's "Thoughts and Prayers".

If you are looking for something longer, you have to make a decision. "Narcos", "Better Call Saul" or "House of Cards" from Netflix are not particularly surprising, but both are quite good. Parks and Recreation is nice and good for in between. If you are looking for something more sophisticated, you can watch the first season of "True Detective". Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey try to solve an occult murder. Significantly stronger than the second season with Vince Vaughn, Taylor Kitsch and Colin Farrell. "Dexter" is good but became too monotonous for me personally. The first two seasons are definitely worth watching. "Prison Break" also starts off strong, but as time goes on it becomes more and more wacky and a bit megalomaniac. By the way, the new season is rather so-so. I personally found “13 Reasons Why” very good, but my circle of friends sees things differently. Maybe just start and overlook minor mistakes. Incidentally, I found “Making A Murderer” very interesting, also from Netflix. If you are on Amazon, you can give yourself "The Man In The High Castle".

So you see, there's no need to wait for Big Bang Theory season 1. Finally, give yourself the awesome True Detective Season XNUMX Intro:
