VR glasses guide: Everything you should know about virtual reality glasses!

VR has been on everyone's lips for some time, or on everyone's eyes, you could say. Perhaps you have already been able to test one of the glasses in an electronics store and are now considering getting one of these glasses. In our VR glasses test 2023 all your open questions will be answered and you can get an overview of the current models.

What are virtual reality glasses and what do I need them for?

The VR glasses create a virtual reality, a 3D world. This is associated with complex technology and the highest possible resolution. With VR glasses you have the feeling of being in the middle of the (virtual) situation and you feel part of it. The highest possible resolution is the guarantee for a great sense of reality. VR glasses can either be connected to a computer or a console (e.g. Playstation), receive the signal and then display the image on the integrated display.

Im Housing of the glasses there is a lens in front of each eye, in front of which a partial image adapted by appropriate software is projected in a curved manner. For this reason you can then see the sequences three-dimensionally with these glasses. However, the smartphone can also be used for this purpose. To do this, it is simply plugged into a holder on the VR glasses and the smartphone acts as a screen.

This requires a special app or a video player. This is necessary to split the image and display the 3D images. With VR glasses you can not only play absolutely realistic games, you can watch films with them or even watch the football broadcast.

How much do VR glasses cost me?

There are big differences in the price range. You can buy VR glasses for your smartphone from around 30-60 euros. The situation is different with the virtual reality glasses for the console or the PC. We were able to find the cheapest model at Psystation. The VR glasses cost around 260 euros here. The most expensive VR glasses come from HTC and cost up to 750 euros.

Who are VR glasses suitable for?

In principle, the VR glasses are suitable for anyone who wants to be “right in the middle of things instead of just being there”. Would you like to immerse yourself in a film and take part in the film together with the actors? You can experience this feeling with the VR glasses. Or would you like to sit in the middle of the crowd at the next football game on TV? You will be able to feel that with VR glasses.

Virtual Reality vs. Augmented Reality: What are the differences?

With Virtual Reality (VR), the goal is to let the user completely immerse themselves in virtual reality. On the other hand, with Augmented Reality (AR), the virtual components are displayed as the content of the real world, but reality remains fully present. Virtual reality is considered the forerunner of augmented reality. Experiments with VR were already being made in the early 1900s.

In 2012, VR attracted general media interest when the VR glasses Oculus Rift were presented. In the summer of 2016, AR came into focus - thanks to the AR Pokémon Go game. This will also give the AR a longer market presence, as it will enable it to reach a larger crowd. This medium can also be used regardless of location and can be easily integrated into everyday life.

In the future, AR can lead to completely new and effective methods in information processing and media design. VR, on the other hand, will probably be more of a “niche medium” for hardcore gamers and totally obsessed film lovers. There are a whole range of different VR systems available to immerse yourself in the virtual world. The best known, however, are the head-mounted displays (HMD), known to you as VR glasses.

What different VR glasses are there?

Depending on the requirements, there are of course different types of VR glasses. Here you can see the most well-known ones and find out about their possible uses.

  • Low end glasses: are usually quite inexpensive entry-level models. Here the smartphone is the VR system and is attached to the user's head with a cardboard holder. The view is then directed to the display using plastic lenses. You can get these VR glasses from around 10 euros, but these glasses are only recommended for the passive consumption of content
  • Mobile glasses: you can often get these VR glasses in a bundle when you buy a new smartphone. Unlike the low-end glasses, these VR glasses usually also have integrated tracking sensors, which can record head movements, for example. However, these models also quickly reach their limits in terms of input and tracking options and computing and graphics power, so the mobile glasses are mainly suitable for consuming 360-degree photos, videos or virtual reality tours. They are also suitable for small games.
  • High end glasses: these systems use a PC or a console as the playback medium instead of the smartphone. The VR glasses are connected here and are therefore a lot more powerful than the other two systems, as they also support more demanding VR applications. This allows you to dive even deeper into the action with these VR glasses.
  • Stand alone glasses: these systems are relative newcomers to the market. These VR glasses work completely independently, no smartphone or PC is needed anymore. These glasses are the ideal solution for on the go. Only compromises in computing power have to be accepted with these glasses.

Buy VR glasses? You should consider this before you buy!

If you are now toying with the idea of buying VR glasses, there are a few things to consider here too so that you can find the perfect model for you. First you have to think about your budget. The price ranges determine the quality here.

The integrated hardware on your PC is also very important. After all, what use are the most expensive and best VR glasses if the hardware cannot cope with these high-performance requirements? Incidentally, the same applies to the VR glasses for the console. One Playstation 3 will not be compatible with VR glasses and will therefore not work.

Image quality is also important. Here you must above all on the DPI regard. It indicates both the pixel density and the number of pixels. Ensure a minimum resolution of 1080 pixels, the total resolution should be 1920×1080 pixels. Also very important are the refresh rate and the field of view. The refresh rate should ideally be 60 Hertz, although 90 Hertz would be more advisable. This ensures that your game runs without stutters.

The field of view should be around 100 to 110 degrees, then the virtual world looks most natural. It is also very advantageous if you can put on the glasses and check how comfortable they are. Especially if you are gambling for a long time, the glasses must be able to be worn comfortably for a long time. Glasses wearers should pay particular attention to the fact that the frame of the glasses fits under the VR glasses.

VR glasses test: our conclusion

Unfortunately, VR glasses are still quite expensive components for your optimal gaming experience. Therefore they are probably not (yet) mainstream capable. But this will certainly change fundamentally in the coming years and then you can dive into completely new gaming levels with the VR glasses and your computer or console game will become even more realistic and you will then really be “right in the middle, instead of just there”. Of course you can rely on the low-end glasses, but gaming is not possible with them.
