Netbook review 2023

Netbooks are far from being old-fashioned: the small laptops definitely have a number of advantages over heavy and slow notebooks in everyday use Tablets – and they are hardly noticeable in the price.

But which netbook should you choose in 2023? What are the advantages and disadvantages? We are happy to spoil you for the choice and have made a pre-selection of inexpensive netbooks.

The small netbooks fit in any backpack, don't weigh that much, but still offer enough power for everyday tasks. LincPlus P1 13,3 inch Full HD Ultrabook Laptop Windows

The first in our overview is the LincPlus P1. The netbook's display has a diagonal of 13,3 inches and has a Full HD resolution. Windows 10 is preinstalled on the eMMC storage. The memory is 64 GB, but can be expanded up to 512 GB if required. The LincPlus P1 is also convincing in another area: It does not require active ventilation, which means that the noise level while working and surfing is very limited. The full-fledged keyboard also makes a good impression and appears to be of higher quality than in comparable models. The manufacturer promises a running time of eight to ten hours for the LincPlus P1 netbook, which is equipped with a battery with a full capacity of 12.000 mAh.

Acer Chromebook Spin 311

The Acer Switch 3 is a little more expensive than the LincPlus P1, but has a very special feature to impress: the netbook becomes one in no time Tablet – the display is simply unplugged from the keyboard. The Acer Active Stylus Pen can be used for operation, but the good old finger can also do the job. The screen itself has a diagonal of 12,2 inches and has a Full HD resolution. There is a holder on the back of the display so that the convertible netbook can stand well without a keyboard. In the basic configuration you get the Acer Switch 3 with 64 GB of fixed storage and 4 GB of RAM. However, the internal capacity can be expanded to 128 GB if necessary. When it comes to the operating system, you can choose between the pre-installed Windows 10 in S mode (optimized for security and performance) or the classic Windows 10 Home. But more memory and a more extensive OS also cost more.

iOTA ONE 25,65cm (10,1 inch Full HD) 2-in-1 detachable notebook

The iOTA ONE is slightly smaller than the previously presented netbooks. It comes in at 10,1 inches or 25,56 centimeters in size. In terms of price, it is one of the cheap models currently available. Like the Acer Switch 3, the small laptop was designed to be detachable, which means that the display and keyboard can also be separated here. So it is a netbook and a tablet in one device. Since this is really a very inexpensive device, no miracles should be expected when it comes to the equipment. The Intel Atom Z8350 is used as the processor, which is supported by 2 GB of working memory and 32 GB of fixed memory. Windows 10 is already pre-installed on the iOTA ONE. The simple keyboard is more suitable for short texts.

Lenovo Miix 320 25,7 cm (10,1 inch Full HD IPS Touch) 2-in-1 tablet

At the end of our test, a look at the Lenovo Miix 320. This is also a detachable device in which the small 10,1-inch display can be separated from the keyboard. Just like the iOTA ONE, the Lenovo Miix 320 also uses an Intel Atom Z8350 as the processor, but the other features are better. Windows 10 Home and Microsoft Office 365 has plenty of space on the 64 GB storage. The RAM of 4 GB is also quite impressive in this price range. The Lenovo Miix 320 scores particularly well in terms of weight: the netbook weighs just 550 grams. The manufacturer states ten hours for the continuous running time.

Netbooks differ in many areas, but what is actually really important? We answer the most important questions before you decide on one of these small laptops.

What is a netbook and what are the advantages?

Netbooks were originally only intended for surfing the Internet. Since an expensive notebook or tablet is not always required for this, the manufacturers have often installed hardware that is not quite as powerful.

Today, netbooks have evolved to include fast storage, fairly high resolution, and some expansion options. In terms of price, however, netbooks can still be found in the lower segment today. You really don't need to spend more than 400 euros for a netbook.

What is the difference to a conventional netbook?

Netbooks are much smaller compared to notebooks. Display diagonals of 10 inches are not uncommon here. An important difference lies in the possible application. Notebooks are more suitable if you want to create something productive. If, on the other hand, it is primarily about entertainment, then a netbook is often the better idea.

Another important difference concerns the ability of many netbooks to simply turn the display into a tablet. To do this, the keyboard, which can often be plugged in, is simply removed without further ado - and you already have a tablet in your hand instead of a netbook or notebook

How much does a netbook cost me?

Netbooks are usually quite cheap. They start at around 150 euros and – depending on the equipment – end at around 500 euros. We recommend stopping at 400 euros at the latest. If more money is available, then you should rather rely on a pure tablet or notebook. Nevertheless it should be said:

The cheaper the netbook, the less you can expect in terms of performance. For example, if you want to watch YouTube videos in high resolution or play simple games from time to time, you should rather pay a little more

Who should get a netbook?

A netbook is exactly the right choice when a classic notebook is too expensive or too extensive - and a pure tablet lacks the opportunity to type longer texts quickly. You should get a netbook if you want more than what a tablet can offer you.

Netbooks are cheap, flexible in use and usually also have a touchscreen, so that the device can also be controlled with just your fingers. This is not the case even with many notebooks, since the combination of keyboard and mouse is still used here in a very classic way.

Netbook test: our verdict

Netbooks have changed a lot over time to keep up with changing media behavior. They still have a right to exist today because they can be flexible like a tablet, but also useful like a notebook. Ideally, you get the best of both worlds without having to dig deep into your pocket.
