Laptop for students - why they are more important than many parents think
At some point the time will come when the next generation will ask about their own laptop. But do you really need such a device at such a young age? Parents often assume that this is just a technical gadget that the kids can use to play games or surf the Internet, for example.
That is at least partly true, but nowadays a laptop is almost indispensable, especially for schoolchildren. The reason for this is simple: From secondary school onwards, students also have technical lessons, where they learn how to use technical equipment and modern media. It is of course an advantage if the child has its own laptop, which it can use to learn how to use it at home.
The opposite would be the use of a school laptop, on which the youngsters are far too rarely able to work - which means that they lag behind their classmates. It is therefore an absolute advantage if your child has its own laptop relatively early on in order to learn how to use it, because nowadays digital media are playing an ever greater and more important role - especially with regard to training and later work . So invest a little money and make your child happy with their own laptop.
How do I find the right laptop for students?
Finding the right laptop for students is not that easy, because retailers offer a huge selection of models, many of which are also aimed at young people. Of course, you can also simply buy your child a classic adult laptop, but these devices often offer functions that the offspring do not even need.
When looking for the right notebook The age of the student plays a crucial role in this.
For the sake of clarity, we have compiled the individual age groups and their requirements here.
Laptops for elementary school students
Smaller children who are still in elementary school or maybe even just going to pre-school usually do not need a "real laptop" with various classic functions of an adult laptop. With a device for this age group, the primary aim should be to teach the child how to use a technical device, especially how to operate it.
In most cases, laptops for primary school students are compact and therefore pleasantly light in weight - so they can be easily transported from A to B. In many cases it also makes sense to start with a tablet that does not have a permanently installed keyboard. If required, numerous learning apps that were specially developed for children in this age group can also be installed here.

- Octa core processor, 3GB RAM, 25,6 cm (10,1 in) tall...
- Children from primary school age get thanks to the one-year...
Laptops for secondary school students
For children from secondary school it is worthwhile a more powerful laptop to purchase, the functions of which come close to those of a classic laptop. This is particularly important because in higher school classes, for example, programming is taught in computer science classes and one's own laptop has to be able to cope with the associated requirements.
Depending on the technical interest and talent of the offspring, it also makes sense to invest a little more money in the device and to buy a very well-equipped model directly - you can then use it later during your studies.

- High-resolution display: Enjoy razor-sharp images and clear...
Convertibles and multimedia devices
If you can't decide whether you would rather use a laptop or a tablet, you can discover a wide variety of convertibles in stores. This is a mixture of both devices, with the keyboard being able to be attached or detached as desired. When connected, the tablet is a full-fledged laptop, when detached it is a simple tablet.
Furthermore, it can definitely make sense to give the offspring a multimedia laptop with which they can not only work for school, but also play high-resolution games, surf the Internet, watch films or edit pictures and videos. This saves you having to upgrade to a new device if one of these appears on your child's wish list.
Here we have compiled the advantages and disadvantages of all three types of laptops for you:
Classic laptop
Pro: | cons: |
– Usually offers the best computing performance – Offers a variety of interfaces – Large selection of software | – Can only be operated with keyboard and mouse - Quite clumsy and unwieldy |
Tablets
Pro: | cons: |
– Pleasantly compact and light – Operation via touchscreen – Ideal for beginners | – Comparatively few connections – Less power than a laptop – Less software |
Convertibles
Pro: | cons: |
– Combines the advantages of laptop and tablet – Control via touchscreen and keyboard – Can be set up like a laptop – Relatively good selection of software | – Heavier compared to simple tablets |
Important criteria that you should consider when looking for a suitable student laptop.
performance of the device
Both the CPU and the built-in graphics card and RAM play an important role when choosing a laptop. The rule of thumb is: The more you or your children want to do with the laptop, the more powerful it should be.
For higher requirements, the built-in processor should be equipped with as many cores as possible, and it should also have at least 4 GB of RAM available - but ideally 8 or 16 GB is better. If high-resolution games are also to be played with the device or films are to be watched, a graphics card that is as strong as possible should also be installed.
Built-in hard drive
When it comes to the built-in hard drive, a distinction is usually made between HDD and SSD. Here, too, it depends on what is to be done with the laptop in everyday life: HDD hard drives are significantly slower than the lightning-fast SSD drives, which is particularly noticeable when transferring large amounts of data. Also pay attention to the size of the built-in hard drive - but this can usually be used external hard drives stretch.
screen resolution
Many laptops still come with the small HD resolution HD ready with 720p. However, a device with Full HD resolution is much more recommendable, so that movies, for example, can also be viewed in the best possible resolution if required.
Devices with 4K resolution are currently still very expensive to buy and actually not necessary for school use. Also important: the higher the ppi value (pixel density) of a display, the finer the display's resolution.
Connections
A good laptop should of course have the most important connection options. Make sure you have as many USB ports as possible so that not all inputs are occupied by additional components such as a mouse or keyboard - after all, it should also be possible to connect external hard drives or USB sticks.
There should also be several HDMI inputs on board, which can be used to connect streaming sticks or an external screen if required. WLAN for integration into the home network and a additional Bluetooth interface.
And finally ...
With a little research, finding a suitable student laptop is not that difficult. While small children are still optimally served with a handy tablet, a "real" laptop is particularly recommended for children from primary school upwards. Here it is worth investing in a well-equipped device, which in the best case can also be used during your studies.
