When looking for a suitable tablet, you quickly come across the child-friendly models from Amazon, which also know how to impress with their attractive price-performance ratio. A first look at the Fire HD 10 Kids tablet

The Fire HD 10 Kids tablet is basically a classic Fire HD 10 tablet for adults, but with a special child-friendly surface and a robust cover was added. Thanks to its pleasantly soft material, the latter not only fits perfectly in small children's hands, but also optimally protects the sensitive tablet from accidental knocks, bumps and falls from great heights.

Incidentally, the cover is available in three different shades: aquamarine, sky blue and lavender. In addition to the very good processing quality, we also liked the fact that Amazon has installed an integrated stand on the back of the protective cover. If this is opened, you can easily place the tablet on the Table position so that you can watch an exciting film with your friends, for example.

If the tablet does get damaged despite its good protective cover, the 2-year worry-free guarantee from Amazon comes into play. Within this period, a defective device can simply be sent back to the shipping giant. The latter then automatically sends out a new device to the customer – without any additional costs.

The features of the Fire HD 10 Kids tablet

With a children's tablet, many parents do not necessarily pay attention to the features when choosing a suitable device. However, it definitely makes sense to pay attention to this area, because a device that works too slowly or is not convincing in terms of its technology will not make your offspring very happy. We therefore took a closer look at the three particularly important areas of performance, display and camera.

The Fire HD 10 Kids tablet is equipped with an octa-core 2,0 GHz processor, which is also used in the Fire 7 and Fire HD 8 models. What is new about the 10 model, however, is the fact that 3 GB random access memory are available - the other two models mentioned are only 2 GB. Even if this is only a 1 GB difference, the increase has a positive effect when using the device, because there are almost no stutters and dropouts - so playing and learning is definitely a lot of fun.

The internal storage of the Fire HD 10 Kids tablet is 32GB, which is a bit tight considering the growing number of apps. Fortunately, you can expand the storage space by up to 1 TB simply by inserting a microSD memory card (sold separately) into the dedicated memory card slot.

Display

While the Fire 7 and the Fire 8 HD come with a comparatively poor resolution, the Fire HD 10 Kids tablet scores with a resolution of 1.920x1.200 pixels and a pixel density of 224 ppi. This corresponds exactly to the universally popular Full HD resolution, so that youngsters can watch corresponding HD films on this device without any loss of quality. Thanks to the excellent resolution, using learning apps in HD and surfing the Internet are also a lot of fun.

Camera

The built-in digital camera of the Fire HD 10 Kids tablet has also received an upgrade compared to its cheaper siblings: It has a resolution of 5 megapixels, while the Fire 7 and the Fire 8 HD only have a meager 2 megapixels. Now, of course, it has to be said in fairness that you can't create outstanding photos with a 5-megapixel camera either, but the results can be seen in a direct comparison with the 2-MP cam. For preschool children, for whom the tablet is recommended, this resolution should be high enough anyway. However, it is still a pity that videos can still only be recorded in a smaller HD-ready resolution. If the device already has a Full HD display, we think the camera could have been adjusted accordingly.

And otherwise?

Like all Amazon kids' tablets, the Fire HD 10 Kids tablet comes with a parental dashboard that allows mom and dad to customize how long the tablet can be used. For example, you can specify how long the child may surf the Internet, how long radio plays may be listened to, or how long the total screen time may be. In addition, you can install various child safety devices so that the offspring really only sees what they should see.

Also on board is the Amazon Kids+ service, which can be used free of charge for a whole year. It enables its users to access a wide range of child-friendly content, including radio plays, learning content, videos and games. The selection here is really huge, so that even on a rainy weekend or during a long drive in the car there should be enough entertainment material available. But watch out: the service is automatically renewed after one year if it is not canceled in good time. Amazon Prime customers then pay EUR 4,99 per month, users without Prime benefits pay EUR 7,99 per month.

WLAN and Bluetooth are of course also integrated in the Fire HD 10 Kids tablet, so that you can quickly and easily connect the tablet to your home network or pair it with a wide variety of Bluetooth devices. A connection with wireless Bluetooth headphones would be possible here, for example, which you can also order with the purchase of the Fire HD 10 Kids tablet if you wish - this is of course also a child-friendly version.

And finally ...

The Fire HD 10 Kids tablet is not only the largest Fire HD tablet for kids to date, it is also the most powerful. We really liked the built-in Full HD display of this model, which, in contrast to the Fire 7 and the Fire 8 HD, ensures excellent image quality. The upgrade to 3 GB of working memory is also clearly noticeable in the speed of the device. There is also a plus point in our tablet test for the very robust and custom-fit protective cover, which fits perfectly in the small hands of its users. With regard to the inner values, the child-friendly user interface and the pre-installed Amazon Kids+ service are also convincing. All in all, the Fire HD 10 kids' tablet is convincing across the board and, in our opinion, it is one of the best kids' tablets currently on the market.
