Fire 7 Kids tablet

In more and more families, it is common for even the smallest members of the household to have a tablet. The search for a child-friendly device is fortunately not too complicated, because many manufacturers now offer special children's tablets in their range at reasonable prices. One of them is the Fire 7 Kids tablet from Amazon, which is available for around 120 euros. But do you really get a well-equipped tablet for such a low price that you don't have to replace with a more powerful model after a short time? Our tablet test will tell you.

A first look at the Fire 7 Kids tablet

The Fire 7 Kids tablet is basically a classic Fire 7 tablet from 2022. However, this kids version comes with an additional protective cover into which the tablet fits perfectly. If this has happened, the robust The case's workmanship ensures that knocks, bumps and even a fall from a great height cannot damage the device - so it is ideally designed for small children's hands. Of course, with the protective cover on, all connections and controls can still be reached without any problems, so ideally you don't have to remove them at any time - not even when the device is being charged using the supplied USB cable.

Amazon put a lot of effort into designing the protective cover: not only does it fit perfectly in the hand, but it is also equipped with a fold-out stand on the back. This makes it possible to set up the tablet so that you don't have to hold it in your hand all the time when using it - which is quite practical, especially when watching videos. There is also another plus point for Amazon's in-house 2-year no-worries guarantee: If the device breaks within two years despite the robust case, you only have to send it to Amazon to receive a completely new replacement device afterwards. It's not very sustainable, but it's definitely a blessing for mom and dad's wallets.

The features of the Fire 7 Kids tablet

From a tablet PC for children you should not expect a similarly good equipment as in a device for adults. In addition, the device is extremely inexpensive at a purchase price of around 120 euros, so that the integration of premium equipment would not be possible here, even from a purely price point of view. Nevertheless, the areas of performance, display and camera play an important role when buying a children's tablet, so we would like to go into these three points in more detail below.

performance

A quad-core processor clocked at 7 GHz works inside the Fire 2,0 Kids tablet. But it is only supported by a meager 2 GB random access memory, which also quickly have a negative impact on the use of the device. Especially when using very high-resolution apps, which require a lot of computing power for their flawless display, there are unfortunately ugly jerks and dropouts that spoil the gaming fun immensely. Although mum and dad in particular will notice these, small children also deserve a smooth gaming experience.

If you concentrate on individual tasks, such as surfing the Internet, listening to radio plays or using educational apps, you will hardly notice the weak working memory. However, as soon as you tackle several tasks at the same time, the tablet unfortunately quickly reaches its limits. Of course, you should also keep the low price in mind here, because a higher number of RAM would drive up the price significantly.

Incidentally, the Fire 7 Kids tablet is available with either 16 or 32 GB of storage space. Since this is not too much, especially with regard to apps with extensive content, the storage can ideally be increased. A memory card with up to 16 GB can be used with the 512 GB variant, and even up to 32 TB with the 1 GB model.

Display

The Amazon Fire 7 Kids tablet has a 7-inch (or should I rather say small?) display, which unfortunately does not come with a modern resolution: It offers just 1.024x600 pixels and thus even less than the Fire HD 8 Kids' tablet, which at least has 1.280x800 pixels. Together with a pixel density of just 171 ppi, the resolution of the Fire 7 Kids Tablet is far below the now standard Full HD resolution - it doesn't even reach the smaller HD-ready resolution. Sure, small children will probably not have any problems with the weak resolution, since this is very likely their first tablet anyway - but mom and dad regularly gasp when you can even see individual pixels when looking at the display.

Camera

Unfortunately, the built-in digital camera in the Fire 7 Kids tablet is a letdown. It has a resolution of just 2 megapixels and thus delivers extremely poor photos that lack sharpness, contrast and details. If you want to take selfies, there is another 2 MP camera on the front, but the results achieved here also leave a lot to be desired.

And otherwise?

The Fire 7 Kids tablet features an easy-to-use dashboard for parents. This enables mums and dads to determine exactly how long their offspring can spend each day with which app. In addition, you can also set the daily surfing dose for the Internet or for the entire screen time or set up filters for certain age groups.

Liked it and also Amazon's in-house Platform Kids+, which offers a huge selection of child-friendly content. Here you will find exciting radio plays, audio books from Audible, learning apps, games, videos and much more.
There is a wide range of well-known brands such as Disney, Nick or LEGO to choose from, which provide plenty of entertainment on rainy weekends. However, it is important to know that this platform is only available free of charge for one year. After this period, the monthly fee is EUR 4,99 for Prime customers and EUR 7,99 for non-Prime customers. Of course, the service can be terminated at any time on a monthly basis if desired.

Finally, a word about the performance of the battery: It lasts around 13 hours before it needs to be recharged. Unfortunately, a full charge with a waiting time of around 5 hours takes far too long.

And finally ...

In our tablet test, the Fire 7 Kids tablet proves to be a good entry-level device with a fair price. However, you have to be satisfied with a rather modest configuration: the display doesn't even trigger with HD-ready resolution, the working memory, which is too small, quickly reaches its limits, especially with multiple tasks, and the integrated camera is a total failure. However, this tablet is highly recommended for listening to audio books while driving, for surfing the Internet or for using a wide variety of games or learning apps.
