Keyboard for the iPad - these advantages it brings with it

Apple likes to describe its iPad as a full replacement for a classic laptop. Unfortunately, that's not entirely true, because unlike a laptop, the iPad only has a touchscreen screen. This may be very convenient for playing games or operating various apps, but if you want to enter longer texts on the iPad, the touchscreen quickly becomes a tedious fiddling that takes too much time.

Many iPad owners are therefore wondering whether it might be possible to connect a classic keyboard to the device so that text can be entered more quickly and easily. This actually works and the trade also has a wide variety of versions ready for this. However, it makes little sense to jump on the first model just because it might be cheap to buy.

Instead, you should compare the models on offer to find the perfect keyboard for your iPad. Don't worry, we'll help you find

iPad keyboards: There are these versions

If you look around for a keyboard for the iPad in stores, you will find a wide variety of designs. Of course, real Apple fans first take a look at the Apple Store, because the company itself offers several versions for its devices – anything else would be very strange.

However, since you know that Apple products are not exactly cheap to buy (which unfortunately also applies to the iPad keyboards), it can also be worth taking a look at other manufacturers. In addition to Apple, there are several companies that also have special keyboards for the iPad in their range - and at much more affordable prices.

With regard to the compatibility and the quality of these keyboards, in most cases there is nothing to complain about and so you do not necessarily have to resort to the expensive Apple products.

Last but not least, there is also the option of connecting a classic PC keyboard to an iPad. However, this is not quite as practical, since even in 2022 the iPad still does not have a standard USB port. How it works without much effort, we will tell you later in this article.

iPad keyboard: the original from the manufacturer

For real Apple fanboys, it has long been clear that it has to be an original Apple keyboard. The company is currently offering three different models to choose from: the Smart Keyboard for 179 euros, the Smart Keyboard Folio for 199 euros and the Magic Keyboard for 339 euros. The prices are non-binding recommended prices, so they can definitely go down - even if experience has shown that not very much.

Finding the right keyboard for your existing iPad is not that difficult, because Apple states on its website which models each keyboard is compatible with. The Smart Keyboard is more aimed at owners of older models, while the Smart Keyboard Folio and the Magic Keyboard can be used to equip your iPad Pro from the 3rd generation or iPad Air from the 4th generation.

But why are Apple keyboards so expensive? Well, the company has given its keyboards some innovative features that justify the high purchase price. For example, the Magic Keyboard comes in a free-floating design and is equipped with illuminated keys and whisper-quiet input.

Now, of course, every iPad owner has to know for himself whether he needs such additional components or not. If you only want a simple keyboard for entering texts, it might be worth taking a look at the competition.

iPad keyboard: Competitor models

Next to Apple, Logitech is the largest and most well-known manufacturer of iPad keyboards. The renowned company offers an in-house alternative for each of the original models presented above, which is perfectly compatible with the respective device.

For example, as an alternative to the Magic Keyboard, there is the Logitech Combo Touch, which also comes with a multitude of innovative features that are reminiscent of the equipment of the original from Apple - in terms of price, however, Logitech does not dig into its customers' wallets as deeply as it does apple.\

Logitech also has high-quality keyboards at fair prices in its range for many other models, such as the iPad mini.

In addition to Logitech, there are several other manufacturers that offer keyboards for the iPad. In most cases, however, these are classic standard keyboards without additional features. So if you just want to type and don't need any other frills, you can get a relatively inexpensive keyboard here.

Connect conventional keyboard

If you still have a classic USB keyboard, you can also connect it to your iPad. However, many iPads only have an Apple Lightning port, for which you also need a special adapter to plug in a USB port - the iPad Air from the 4th generation, on the other hand, is equipped with a USB-C slot, but for that in turn, a USB-C port on the keyboard is also required.

It is of course even easier if the existing keyboard is a Bluetooth keyboard. In this case you can simply open the Bluetooth settings of the iPad (found under the menu item "Settings" and then on "Bluetooth") to pair the keyboard with the device.

- Comparatively cheap to buy
– 100% compatible with the respective iPad

Conclusion on keyboards for the iPad:

If you don't just use your iPad for gaming and surfing, but also frequently type in long texts, you should definitely think about buying a special iPad keyboard. Of course, Apple itself offers its own models in its range, which are quite expensive in view of the purchase price. If you want to save money, you can alternatively look around for iPad keyboards from other manufacturers.

Here, the well-known company Logitech is a pretty good place to go, which offers a high-quality alternative for all current Apple models. Last but not least, you can also simply connect a classic PC keyboard to your iPad. This is possible either via USB (an adapter is required for older iPads) or particularly conveniently via Bluetooth, provided the keyboard is also Bluetooth-enabled.
