Pen for tablet - when is it recommended?

Normally, most people control their tablet with their fingers using classic touchscreen input. But have you ever tried to draw a picture or sketch with your fingers?

As a rule, this does not lead to the desired success, because even the slenderest fingers are too thick for precise drawings, to put it mildly. With a special pen for tablet PCs, on the other hand, it is very easy to create perfect drawings, as you have the feeling of holding a real drawing pen in your hand - and of course, thanks to its wafer-thin tip, it also delivers significantly better results.

Professional draftsmen or people who often sketch or write a lot in their job will quickly appreciate the advantages of such a stylus, as will students in the corresponding courses.

But a tablet pen has another advantage:
It helps to ensure that no unsightly fingerprints are left on the device's screen, which means that it hardly ever needs to be cleaned.

The different types of tablet pens

If you look around for a tablet pen in stores, you will quickly find that there are numerous different models. Some of them are very cheap to buy, others cost between 30 and 100 euros. Current pens for tablet PCs are currently available in four different versions, which we would like to present to you in more detail here.

Passive stylus pen

A passive stylus pen is the most basic design available on the market. It is reminiscent of a classic pen and is compatible with all capacitive touch screens – including those from Smartphones, if this is desired. Its tip is made of electrically conductive material, but compared to alternative models it is a bit "chunkier" and therefore not suitable for particularly precise drawing work. However, it does not require a battery for this and is immediately ready for use at any time. In addition, a stylus pen is not equipped with automatic palm recognition. We'll tell you what it's all about in a moment.

  • Particularly inexpensive to purchase
  • Works with all touch screens
  • Requires no batteries or rechargeable batteries
  • The tip is a bit chunky
  • No palm detection

Active stylus pen

In contrast to the passive stylus, the active stylus is equipped with an integrated rechargeable battery. Such a pen generates an electromagnetic field in the area of the tip, which is also significantly thinner compared to the classic stylus - so an active stylus is ideal for precise drawing and writing tasks. Such a stylus is also compatible with all common touchscreen screens, so that it can be used in a variety of ways.

  • Works with all touch screens
  • Pleasantly thin tip
  • Battery needs charging
  • No palm detection

Stylus with Bluetooth

Some stylus pens also come with built-in Bluetooth. If the tablet also supports Bluetooth and the use of the pen, both components can be connected to each other wirelessly. The Bluetooth connection brings some important advantages, such as the already mentioned palm recognition and pressure sensitivity, which are very important for professional work. However, one should note that such a stylus is by no means compatible with all devices and is also quite expensive to buy.

  • Enables very precise work
  • Pleasantly thin tip
  • Wrist recognition
  • Pressure sensitivity
  • Not compatible with all devices
  • Comparatively expensive

Digitizer

Digitizers are a special subspecies of tablet pens that are only compatible with a select few tablets—namely, those models that have a special coating. Two well-known examples of digitizer pens are the Apple Pencil for the iPad Pro and the S-Pen from Samsung, which is used in the Samsung Galaxy Note series, among others. Since these pens enable particularly precise work, they are in great demand among artists and graphic designers in particular - in these areas there is hardly a better choice when it comes to finding the right pen.

  • Enables very precise work
  • Pleasantly thin tip
  • Wrist recognition
  • Pressure sensitivity
  • Compatible only with supported devices
  • Battery needs charging
  • Comparatively expensive

You should definitely bear this in mind when buying a tablet pen

Automatic palm detection

We have already briefly mentioned the automatic palm recognition above. who one Tablet PC operated with a pen, will quickly find that the heel of the hand will often end up unintentionally on the screen, since it is easier to paint or write that way. The problem, however, is that this touch contributes to landing a dot on the image or document that shouldn't be there.

Tablet pens with automatic palm recognition ensure that this does not happen. However, this feature is only supported by Bluetooth pens and digitizers, as the stylus and the touch screen must communicate with each other. As a professional draftsman or artist, you should definitely not do without this very practical feature.

Pressure sensitivity

We have also briefly mentioned the keyword pressure sensitivity. Simple tablet pens only have a fixed pressure point, so that all drawn lines or written words have the same thickness.

Higher-quality pens, on the other hand, have several thousand different pressure sensitivities, which the user can use to determine how thick or thin he draws a line. The tilt detection of the pen is also interesting in this context: It allows larger areas to be painted much faster.

Manufacturer of tablet pens

There are now quite a few manufacturers of tablet pens to discover on the market. For example, Samsung, Apple and Microsoft Models that are specially designed for their in-house tablets - but Apple in particular can pay dearly for this. If you don't want to spend that much money, but still want to own a high-quality tablet pen, you will also find models from manufacturers that don't have to hide behind well-known competitors.

The Bamboo company, for example, is quite interesting here, as it has several high-quality and stylish pens for a wide variety of tablets in its range. Mixoo models, on the other hand, score points despite their excellent price-performance ratio thanks to their high-quality workmanship and multiple functions.

batteries or rechargeable batteries

Depending on the tablet pen, the individual models can be equipped with standard batteries or rechargeable batteries. Rechargeable batteries are of course clearly preferable here, as they can be recharged at any time when they are empty, while batteries have to be disposed of and replaced with new batteries - which can quickly become expensive, especially if the pen is used frequently.

And finally ...

Pens for tablets have the advantage that drawings or texts can be created on them much more easily than is the case with conventional operation via the touchscreen display - they are therefore particularly suitable for creative painters, artists and graphic designers, but also for students who are taking a corresponding course.

When choosing the right pen, it is important to note that passive and active stylus pens are more suitable for occasional applications, while higher-priced models with a Bluetooth interface and special digitizers are recommended for regular use - only the latter models have important advantages such as automatic palm recognition and adjustable pressure sensitivity.
