If from senior Cell phones we are talking about, they are often classic mobile phones with huge buttons that are intended to make it particularly easy for older people to use them. Not all Seniors However, we would like to run around with a cell phone bone that is visually showing its age, but a modern one instead Smartphone use.

The Doro 8050 Plus was designed for precisely those people, which offers the advantages of an excellently equipped Smartphones (including WhatsApp) combined with those of an easy-to-use senior cell phone. We took a closer look at the device, which costs around 150 euros, and will tell you in our following field report whether the purchase is worthwhile.

Design and scope of delivery

The good news first: The Doro 850 Plus has the look of a classic smartphone and gives the user the feeling of holding a modern device in their hands.

The device has a 5,4-inch screen, which makes it easy to read the displayed content and the actual processing of the smartphone is also impressive - although only robust plastic is used here due to the comparatively low purchase price. Nevertheless, the black and gray finish is also visually convincing, while the device itself lies comfortably in the hand.

In addition to the Doro 8050 Plus itself, the scope of delivery also includes a type C charger and even a charging station - the latter allows you to conveniently put down your smartphone so that it can be supplied with new energy in no time at all.

Furthermore, the manufacturer has also thought of a pretty case, which makes it possible to carry it safely on the go.

Hardware

The technical equipment of the Doro 8050 Plus is quite impressive for a senior's cell phone, although of course you have to make some compromises here. For example, the device's display only has a resolution of 1.440 x 720 pixels, which at least corresponds to the lower HD resolution and thus enables films to be viewed in very good quality.

Inside the smartphone is a high-performance quad-core processor from Qualcomm, which achieves a maximum clock rate of 1,3 GHz and is also supported by 2 GB random access memory. The pre-installed Android 9 operating system is not quite up to date, but it can still score with its very simple operation and is therefore not a real minus point.

For storing personal data such as photos or videos, the Doro 8050 Plus has 16 GB of internal storage space, which can even be expanded using an inserted microSD memory card - a maximum of 32 GB can be retrofitted here if desired.

Excursions to the Internet are also possible with the Doro 8050 Plus at 4G speed on request, and WiFi and Bluetooth 4.2 are also on board.

Of course, the Doro 8050 Plus can also take photos and videos: For this purpose, a camera with 13 megapixel resolution is installed on the back, which is also equipped with a 4x zoom and flash. On the front of the device there is an additional 5-megapixel camera for video calling and taking selfies.

Exemplary:

The built-in battery of the Doro 8050 Plus lasts around 300 hours in stand-by mode, alternatively 13 hours of continuous telephoning are possible.

Special features for seniors

Of course, as you would expect from a good smartphone for seniors, the Doro 8050 Plus also offers some functions that are aimed directly at older people. For example, the device is equipped with a particularly powerful loudspeaker and the volume of the ringtones can also be set very high if desired. In addition, the Doro 8050 Plus is also suitable for users of hearing aids, as it is compatible with the little helpers in the ear.

The SOS emergency call button integrated on the back of the device is also really practical. After you have previously installed the free Response by Doro on your smartphone, you can use it to save your preferred emergency contacts - for example children or grandchildren.

If the button is then pressed, the smartphone automatically establishes contact with all stored emergency contacts and sends them the cell phone owner's location data via SMS. In addition, an emergency contact can also speak directly to the person seeking help via a call - the phone automatically switches to speaker mode for this.

Another useful feature is the GPS function of the Doro 8050 Plus: it is automatically activated as soon as a special button is pressed or as soon as the smartphone user uses the Google Maps app and automatically sends the current location of the senior to his children or other family members - so they always know where the owner of the mobile phone is.

Furthermore, the Doro 8050 Plus is also equipped with special light sensors that are integrated on the front of the device: These automatically detect the current ambient brightness and adjust the brightness of the screen accordingly. An additional motion sensor also detects the movements of the user and takes care of it in this way, for example. that the touchscreen function is switched off as soon as his ear is close to the phone.

And finally ...

The Doro 8050 Plus is one of the best smartphones for seniors that is currently on the market and, for comparatively little money, offers quite convincing features and many additional functions specifically aimed at seniors. This was also the opinion of the Stiftung Warentest, which chose the Doro 8050 Plus as the test winner among 15 tested mobile phones for seniors. However, the setup is not that easy and should be carried out by experienced people. However, if the basis is in place, it is definitely a good smartphone for seniors with WhatsApp.
