ADATA DashDrive HD710 in review

Review of the ADATA DashDrive HD710

With the DashDrive HD710, the Manufacturer ADATA in a niche. The HD710 is a so-called outdoor hard drive, they are more likely to be used outdoors or in areas where the hard drive can fall or be exposed to direct contact with water. We was from ADATA the yellow 1TB version of the HD710 was made available, one was installed here Toshiba MQ01ABD100.

processing / design

The color of the HD710 immediately catches the eye. In addition to yellow, it is also available in blue and black. Basically, the color scheme looks very fresh, the hard drive clearly stands out from the normal shape and color scheme. Except for the middle part, the hard disk is completely covered with a rubber cover to absorb hard shocks and blows. The USB port is covered by a small rubber flap to protect it from sand and water, at least superficially. The cable is attached to the hard drive with a kind of clip mechanism, so that it can be transported very conveniently together with the hard drive. An additional bag is not necessary here. The processing at the edges of the hard drive is very clean, optically there is nothing to complain about here. We also like the design very much, the color and shape fit the hard drive's area of application very well and give it a rough touch.

If the hard disk is connected and active, this is indicated by a small blue LED. This is attached in the middle. A big plus point here is that the LED only lights up very weakly, so that this is not annoying when working. This is also a clear advantage when using the HD710 as a media hard drive, since there is no annoying blinking when watching a film, for example.

Hardware

As mentioned above, a Toshiba MQ01ABD100 was installed in our test device. This works with RPM 5400 and has an 8MB cache. The HD710 is currently only available with 1TB. It is currently unclear whether larger models will also be available in the future. The Data transmission takes place via USB 3.0 Port which is also USB 2.0 compatible.

There is not much more to say here, as the focus of the external hard drive is clearly on the protection of data. However, this does not mean that technology has been saved. Overall, the hard disk performed very well, as the following benchmark test results show.

Conclusion

If you need mobile data and especially in real outdoor areas, you are spot on with the ADATA HD710. We have the hard drive under test Dropped it several times from different heights, it still worked fine. Even a fall from about 5 meters! Height did not affect functionality. To test protection against water, we placed the hard drive in a bucket filled with water for 5 minutes. Result: Even after this test, the hard disk worked without any problems. We can therefore confirm the statements of the manufacturer “Shockproof” and “Waterproof” across the board. For example, if you shoot a lot of outdoor films and have to save them on the go, the HD710 is the right choice. From us, therefore, a clear purchase recommendation!
