Design

In terms of design, Philips has obviously put a lot of effort into the DTR 5000 2.0 BT DAB+. The compact radio, which with its dimensions of 11,5 x 21 x 12 cm easily finds shelter on any shelf or in a wall unit in the living room, has a classic retro look, which, however, only looks particularly good in the "oak" color variant come into force. As the name suggests, it is Housing embedded in a pretty real wood case, while the front of the Radios in timeless white and the controls and speaker openings in silver. A built-in mini color display provides further color accents, which can be used to read, for example, which of the available reception types is currently being used - more on that in a moment.

In the alternative variants, the retro look is not quite as innovative, since the clever accent is simply missing due to the wood not being used. Instead, the Grundig DTR 5000 is presented here in white-silver or black-silver - which should still appeal to lovers of the respective colors. For all three models, however, the Grundig DTR 5000 delivers a great picture in terms of processing quality - which is by no means the case with every radio.

What's in the box

In addition to the radio itself, the scope of delivery also includes a suitable power cable for connecting to the power supply, which fortunately has a sufficient length. A remote control is also included, which is pleasantly compact and therefore fits perfectly in the hand. It allows full control of the device, so you can operate the radio from the comfort of your sofa.

Facilities

The Grundig DTR 5000 2.0 BT DAB+ is a versatile multifunction radio that can receive radio programs in a wide variety of ways. As the name suggests, it supports modern radio reception via DAB+, i.e. digital terrestrial radio, which is transmitted from the transmission mast to the device and has a significantly better sound compared to FM. Alternatively, FM reception is also possible with the device without any problems - just in case the DAB+ reception is not possible or is disrupted for some reason. For this purpose, the radio has a built-in and extendable antenna, which can significantly improve reception of the preferred local station depending on the location.

On the other hand, if you prefer to receive German or Europe-wide radio stations, you can do this as well: Using the integrated WLAN, you can connect the Grundig DTR 5000 2.0 BT DAB+ to your home WLAN router relatively easily and then access thousands of web stations - so you shouldn't get bored that quickly come up.

A real plus point is the built-in USB port on the radio: it allows you to connect a USB stick on which several favorite songs are stored in MP3 format - these can then be enjoyed directly through the radio speakers. If you don't want to use a USB stick, you can also use the USB input for a different purpose: it can then simply be used to charge one Smartphones, a tablet PC or any other device with a USB interface - such as a modern night light with a rechargeable battery. The radio also has an AUX socket and a Bluetooth interface for connecting to other music sources. For example, you can be like that Smartphone connect to the radio via Bluetooth and then enjoy your favorite music through the speakers.

Other features

The Grundig DTR 5000 2.0 BT comes with a few small additional features that we would like to mention at this point. For example, there is a practical automatic sleep function, where you can simply set a desired time at which the radio switches off - so you can easily let your favorite music lull you to sleep. Conversely, the integrated alarm function helps to wake you up in the morning with your favorite station - and if you want to sleep a minute or two longer after a night that is far too short, this is also possible thanks to the useful snooze function.

The Grundig DTR 5000 2.0 BT DAB+ in a practical test

The Grundig DTR 5000 2.0 BT DAB+ definitely convinced us in the practical test. Receiving programs via DAB+ as well as via classic FM is pleasantly simple, although the sound quality is of course significantly better with DAB+. With the help of various equalizer setting options (including pop, jazz and rock), you can further improve the sound quality. Not all of them actually deliver a convincing sound experience, so it's best to experiment a little to find the perfect sound for you.

Apart from the reception of radio programs, which works without any problems with all types of reception, the Grundig DTR 5000 2.0 BT DAB+ only has to contend with a few small teething problems, which are sometimes more and sometimes less serious: Every now and then, for example, it can be too short There are dropouts in the WLAN connection, which could have been avoided with an additional LAN connection. The said Internet radio reception some buyers also certify slight cracking noises in the background in their reviews. We were not able to determine this, but such statements do not come about all by themselves.

It's also annoying that the integrated MP3 player doesn't have a real memory: If you switch on another equalizer mode in the meantime, playback starts over again, which is unfortunately quite annoying.
