Headset is noisy: what can I do about it?

Your headset is supposed to be an aid to you. With it you can really enjoy the music, talk to your conversation partner without disturbing ambient noise and of course you can fully enjoy the special acoustic effects while gaming. But what if the headset only rustles and crackles?
When you can't hear anything else because of the noise? In most cases, the headset initially works perfectly, only to suddenly start making noise. Now it's time to keep a cool head and not panic, because it's usually a little thing that doesn't let your headset work properly. The only thing you need for error analysis is time.

First aid

As already mentioned, there can be a very mundane reason why your headset is hissing. Here are the "little things" that make your headset no longer work reliably:
1.) The simplest cause is that the headset is not properly connected. This isn't as far-fetched as you might think, and it actually happens more often than you might think. First of all, check whether the plug is properly inserted in the socket. Usually there is a small resistance to overcome when plugging in. However, if you don't completely overcome this, the plug is not properly connected and the signals are not coming through to the headset clearly.
2.) You can also plug the headset into a different slot when troubleshooting. If the noise is now eliminated, the first slot used is probably defective.
3.) In any case, also check whether all connections are properly connected. Especially if you want to listen to music through a stereo system. All components must be properly and firmly connected to each other, otherwise the unwanted noise will occur.
4.) It could also be possible that your headset has a broken cable. Just try it with a different headset or headphones. You might also try a different pair of headphones (if you have one). That way you rule out a broken wire (if you don't do this test and it's actually a broken wire, you'll never find the true cause of the noise).
However, if you don't have any other headset/headphones available, simply plug the noise into another playback device (e.g. stereo system). If you can still hear the noise, then the headset itself is defective - you can only hope that the defect occurred within the warranty period and that the retailer will replace it for you.

It could also be the software

It does not always have to be the slot that is defective when a headset starts to hiss and crackle. Also, it doesn't have to be the headset itself that's broken. Sometimes the problem for noise in the headset is simply the software. Your computer usually carries out updates itself, but sometimes it can happen that something goes wrong and something is not installed correctly. So what else can you do?

  • Be sure to update to the latest version of the software!
  • Go to “Settings” and click the “Sound button”. Then go to “Recording Devices”, then select “Speakers” and look for the “Improvements” setting. Here you can select “Disable all sound effects”. Is the noise gone now? Then it may be that your headset is not compatible with yours sound card is compatible.
  • If you use a USB headset, always make sure that you have the latest driver installed. If the driver or the driver software is out of date, problems can arise. If you're concerned that your computer isn't running the updates properly, check your headset manufacturer's website for the latest version of the software and update it.
  • h Finding the cause of noise in a headset can be time-consuming, but it can be worth it. But before you mess up the entire software with countless updates and your entire system then no longer works properly, including the noise from your headset, you better take care of the easy-to-resolve causes first.
