The big PC case guide: everything you need to know!

There are almost countless PC cases on the market. You are sure to be overwhelmed by the sheer number of different models. So that you don't completely lose track and can find the right case for your hardware, we have compiled all the important facts about "PC cases" here and make the information available to you here. Let our research convince you of your favorite model. In this section, your open questions will be clarified and you will find out everything relevant to the topic.

How much does a good PC case cost me?

You can get a good, solid branded case for your PC for around 30 euros. In addition to quick-release fasteners, this also has LED lighting. However, it is also much more expensive in the PC housing sector, because the Dark Base from bequiet! you get, for example, from a price of around 149 euros. Of course, the price also depends on the size of the case.

However, compromises can only be made here in the rarest of cases, because if you need the space, then you need the space. You can't cut or shrink your motherboard. It is therefore always important to compare the prices of the different product groups. Here are the average prices of the current different product groups:

  • Big Tower: you can get it from 60 to 500 euros.
  • Midi Tower: this PC case is available from 60 to 390 euros.
  • Mini ITX or Micro-ATX: you can buy the smallest cases for 25 to 115 euros.

What housing sizes are there and which ones do I need?

Basically, the housings are divided according to size. The largest cases are therefore the big or midi towers. These PC cases have a volume of 50-120 liters. With them you have a lot of space for accommodating your hardware. However, PC cases with a volume of around 38 liters are completely sufficient for the “average user”.

The size of the PC case also has a direct influence on the cooling. In the large PC cases, the cooling of the central components, such as the CPU, voltage converter or graphics card, is simply better than if you have to squeeze everything into a relatively small PC case. The air can then no longer circulate as well around the individual components and there is a risk of serious damage from overheating.

If you notice that your chosen favorite PC case is getting a bit cramped, then opt for the larger model and simply leave the space in it empty. Maybe you want to add more components to your system at some point and then you're really happy that you decided on the larger model. The small PC cases are more for gamers who build their own powerful computer as a replacement for a console.

These usually only need the space for two hard drives, one optical Drive, and a graphics card. For such requirements, the small housings are usually completely sufficient and the positive side effect: the small PC housings are usually a few euros cheaper than their big brothers.

Buy a PC case? You should consider this before you buy!

When choosing the right PC case, the intended use plays an important role. A simple PC installed in an office on the Desk stands, makes different demands on a housing than, say, a Gaming PC. Especially the basic components (here mainly the mother or mainboard meant) are decisive for the choice of a suitable PC case.

Auf dem Motherboard not only do all the connections come together, there are also other components here, such as the random access memory, the processor or the graphics card. Of course, mainboards are not only available as standardized parts, but in many different sizes. It is therefore very important that you find out in advance what size your new PC case needs to be.

The noise level is also important when buying a PC case. How loud is the fan when running? Do you need an additional silencer? You should also consider adequate ventilation. Only if the ventilation works well will your computer do the same! Also check whether your new PC case also has removable hard drive cages, which also offer enough space for all components to be installed.

Also, be sure to check out how quick and easy (or not) replacing PC components will be once the case is installed. It can always happen that a component becomes defective and then it is also worthwhile to think about such eventualities in advance. The current gaming PC cases in particular impress with various glass inserts and LED light effects. However, since these models also have a higher purchase price, you can also consider whether you can conjure up similar effects yourself with DIY.

Finally, of course, the appearance of the new housing should not be neglected. Of course you should not make the optics your main criterion, but it can also be taken into account with this component. After all, your computer should also be an ornament for the room and not just a work or play device.

PC case test: our conclusion

Before you buy a PC case, you should first think about how big the case should be. A distinction is made between Mini-ITX, Micro-ATX, MIDI-Tower and BIG Tower cases. Remember: The smaller the case, the less space your computer takes up, but then you also have to make sure that all hardware components fit into the case and that the mainboard, for example, has the right form factor.

With a larger PC case, you have the advantage that there is a lot of space available in the case itself, but the PC then takes up quite a bit of space. If you are interested in your case, then you are in good hands with our recommendations, which we presented to you above!
