Gamepad Guide: Everything you need to know about gamepads!
Gamepads are very important tools for PC gamers. The powerful current models can no longer be compared with the early models. But in this article we want to make you aware of what is important with the gamepads and what you might easily overlook when buying them and thus make your decision for a model easier.
What is actually a gamepad?
The gamepad is the player's aorta, so to speak. It connects the gamer with the game and allows him to react to various events in the game at lightning speed. The player controls a PC or console game with the gamepad. In the beginning, the gamepads were still referred to as "joypad", but today almost nobody uses this term anymore. Gamepads are mainly used in console games.
In PC games they are usually only used when absolute accuracy and quick reactions are required in the game. Attributes that you cannot access with a mouse. The gamepad is a variant of a game controller. Other variants include steering wheels or Joysticks.
What can a gamepad cost me?
Here the price range is sometimes very high. In principle, however, you should not select the cheapest offer. These are mostly cheap products from the Far East and the quality of these gamepads leaves a lot to be desired. Unfortunately, nobody can tell you in advance whether you will be happy with the most expensive model. Basically, you should be able to get a good gamepad from 17 to 40 euros. But here, too, the old principle applies: no upper limits!
For whom is a gamepad useful and for whom is it not?
Especially the sports simulations are the most fun when you play them with a gamepad. It doesn't matter whether it's ice hockey, basketball, football or tennis - with the gamepad you are much more precise, faster and can set your actions more accurately. Of course, this increases the fun factor enormously, because you would never be so precise with a mouse and keyboard.
But the use of the gamepad has also proven to be more advantageous in many fighting games. The combinations for numerous attacks are simply closer together here, so you can react much faster and place your hits more precisely than with the mouse and/or keyboard.
A gamepad with a USB connection is also perfect for playing games with your friends. The gamepad is also very advantageous for racing simulations. Here you can dash through the game with even more dynamics and that will increase the fun factor considerably. However, if you only want to “drive a race” from time to time, it is definitely not worth buying a gamepad for you.
We would also advise against using a gamepad for all types of first-person shooters and strategy games. If you like to gamble Call of Duty, you probably know that you are simply faster with the mouse.
Which gampad manufacturers are recommended?
Surely you already know all the manufacturers of good gamepads. However, in our large gamepad test, we are sure to have one or the other manufacturer that you do not yet have on your screen. Let yourself be surprised which manufacturers we present to you here in our comparison!
- CSL computers: Gamepads made in Germany, that's to be expected here. The gamepads of the Germans all do well, are increasingly being bought by gamers and are becoming more and more popular.
- Razer Xbox/PC Gamepad: You probably know the manufacturer Razer, which no PC gamer could avoid for many years. In 2010 they decided to work with Xbox and Microsoft decided. However, the gamepad can not only be used on the Xbox, but also as a “normal” PC controller.
- Nvidia Shield Controllers: Nvidia is certainly known to you as a graphics professional. However, the manufacturer also sells a gamepad. However, this can only be used with Shield-enabled end devices and therefore its use is very limited.
- Logitech: nobody can avoid them in the gaming sector in recent years. Logitech offers powerful gamepads at affordable prices, highly recommended.
- Buffalo Retro: a rather unknown manufacturer with us. However, he draws attention to himself with his retro controller, because this gamepad brings back memories of the times of NES and SNES.
Are all gamepads compatible with Mac and Windows?
Not necessarily. In any case, read the technical details of the gamepads before you buy them. Most gamepads are compatible with Windows and Mac, but not everything can always be covered with every gamepad. As I said, read the details carefully so that you don't experience any nasty surprises later.
Buy gamepad? You should note that!
First of all, you have to pay attention to compatibility. Not every gamepad can be used with every system. The universal gamepad simply does not exist (yet). You also have to consider whether you want to use a wired or wireless system. The wireless variant allows you more freedom and flexibility when gambling, and it is also possible to "gamble in large groups". Also take a close look at the input elements on the gamepad.
Are these arranged as you know them from earlier gamepads or are there deviations that you don't necessarily understand? The vibration function on a gamepad is also very helpful, as it indicates a specific event or (in a racing simulation) a crash. In some cases, the vibration also signals an imminent danger. This advance warning can buy you the needed second to react to this threat. Pay attention to other connections on your new gamepad.
Some gamepads also have connections for headsets, for example. By using a headset, you can make your gaming experience even more realistic. In addition, by using a microphone, you can also communicate with other players worldwide. To further optimize your “perfect” gamepad, you can also click on one Lighting put.
Here you can choose between the settings: either you leave the lighting on all the time or you only use it specifically for certain events. And last but not least, your new gamepad must of course fit comfortably in your hand and should not slip out.
Gamepad test: our conclusion
Once you get used to using a gamepad, you probably won't want to be without it. This is only too understandable, because it lets you react faster and more precisely to everything that happens in the game. We hope that we have answered all your questions in our large gamepad comparison and that we have informed you well with our research so that you can find the right gamepad for your requirements.
Have fun gaming with your new gamepad!
