black screen? What to do?

Shock, oh shock-you turn on your computer and the screen stays black! Annoying, but one of THE CLASSICS for PC problems. It can happen that the monitor either stays completely black, or it flickers strangely, or even displays strange fragments of the image.

In these last two cases (flickering and fragmented images), there may well be a problem with the drivers processors or the graphics card. However, other factors can also come into play if your monitor is “leaving you in the dark”.

Here we tell you the different causes for a black screen:

An overview of the possible causes

  • Everything stays black! How to check your graphics card: Most desktop computers usually have an integrated graphics card. The biggest manufacturers are AMD and Nvidia. Do you dare that Housing of your computer? Then look inside and try to find the graphics card. Check if the card is stuck or maybe you have loosened it.
  • Screen works first, then not anymore! Set native resolution: You can identify problems with the resolution by the following symptoms: You start up your PC and see that the screen works - the bios is displayed. But as soon as the actual (Windows) system starts, the monitor goes black. If you've been playing around with the resolution lately, reset the monitor back to the recommended resolution. Look for the exact name of your screen type and look up the factory resolution on the internet. A look at the manual can also help here.
  • Update drivers! That's never wrong: Under certain circumstances, the drivers for your graphics card may not be up to date. These are usually updated via the Windows update, but not always. Therefore, make a note of the exact designation of your graphics card and search for available updates on the manufacturer's website and run them.
  • Screen flickers or stays black? First steps: First you check the cables that lead from the monitor to the computer. Maybe just one contact came loose? You are also welcome to blow hard on all connections to free them from dust. How does the sheathing of the cable look like? Is it damaged or cracked and porous? A little tip: if you have a spare cable, try connecting it once. Maybe you can run your setup over an alternative connection. For example, if you have been using the HDMI input up to now, connect your monitor to the DVI input as a test and see if anything changes.
  • No beeping, no fan noise, no pilot lights coming on, the screen is black as night - don't panic! If the computer screen stays black when you turn it on - take a deep breath first! The fault is probably in the power supply or the on/off switch. In this case, first check the switches on Power Supplies and all cables.

What to do if there is a defect?

In principle, you should stick to the principle that if something is defective on the monitor or the graphics card, then contact your trusted dealer. Do not attempt to repair the system yourself. If the defect occurs within the statutory warranty period, the defective products will be repaired free of charge or even completely replaced. If the warranty period has expired or the defect occurred through your own fault, the manufacturer will usually provide you with a cost estimate.
