Western Digital My Cloud EX2 NAS review

There is plenty of memory with this one NAS server. NAS stands for Network Attached Storage, i.e. storage space connected to a network. This solution can also be used by private users, a NAS is by no means only useful for professional use. Meanwhile, the setup and operation are so easy that anyone can handle it. The version we tested has ample data space of 12 terabytes. This allows the contents of several connected end devices to be backed up at the same time or files to be exchanged via the network. This server offers two hard drivesslots, in the delivery state there are two 6 terabytes in them. If necessary, the plates can be easily exchanged and replaced with faster or larger copies. The uncomplicated exchange is also an advantage in the event of a defect in a data carrier.

What's in the box

processing / design

Here we have to start with a small point of criticism. A metal case would have been desirable in the price range of this network storage device. However, the plastic used is haptically appealing and works very well robust. It's matte, so it doesn't attract fingerprints. With the dimensions of 17,1 by 9,9 by 15,5 centimeters, the Western Digital My Cloud EX2 12TB has turned out to be quite handy.

The weight of almost one kilogram (800 grams) is due to the thick casing and the two HDDs, but a few grams more and more security for the data stored in it are better. We would have expected FireWire or eSATA for the connections, but the built-in USB 3.0 ports (two on the back) and the LAN connection should be sufficient for most users. There are three status LEDs on the front. One each for the operating status of the two hard drives and another one that provides information about any errors in the NAS.

Hardware

A whopping 12 terabytes of storage – you don't fill it up that quickly. In two years, around 150.000 photos from a single-lens reflex camera can be saved in RAW format. Or an MP3 collection of approx. 300.000 pieces of music with sufficient sound quality. So that the media data can be transferred without stuttering, the Western Digital My Cloud EX2 12TB also has an integrated dual-core processor with 2x 1,3 gigahertz and a random access memory from 1GB RAM. If desired, the stored files can be automatically synchronized with all networked devices. The Plex Media Server software allows the data to be made available for PCs, game consoles, smartphones and Tablets. Supported protocols include DLNA, Apple Bonjour, HTTPS, FTP and UpnP. Thanks to the Kensington lock, the Western Digital My Cloud EX2 12TB is also physically protected against unauthorized access. Transmissions are via Gigabit LAN.

Test results

  • Write Speed: 71,2MB/s
  • Read Speed: 68,9MB/s

Other

If the Data transmission is significantly slower than the value determined by us, this can have several causes. The LAN speed must be set to maximum on the PC and router. In addition, the supplied LAN cable or an equivalent model should be used. The USB ports are also great for adding more external hard drives or connect USB sticks. Too bad: A card reader is unfortunately missing.

Conclusion

The Western Digital My Cloud EX2 12TB NAS server was able to convince us to a large extent. We love the easy setup, the user-friendly interface and the huge storage space. On the other hand, the workmanship could have been better, despite efficient ventilation. We also miss FireWire, a card reader or eSATA. Nevertheless, one can say that the price of 620 euros is quite fair for this server. Personal and professional data for the whole family can be backed up and easily streamed to all networked devices. The easy replacement of the plates is another plus point. Anyone who wants to immerse themselves in the world of NAS servers will find a suitable product here.
