What's in the box
In addition to the WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive, the scope of delivery of the external hard drive also includes a USB 3.0 connection cable, more precisely USB Type-A to Micro-B. In addition, Western Digital has included an instruction manual, but it doesn't live up to its name: It only contains three pages and is therefore extremely manageable. Owners of an XBOX can also look forward to a little treat, because all buyers of the hard drive also receive a free XBOX Game Pass month on top. Stupid only if you have a PlayStation.

With the design of the WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive, Western Digital does not allow itself any surprises and relies on the well-known black look, which also lives up to the name of the hard drive. The P10 Game Drive does not set any other color accents - with the exception of the imprinted lettering WD_Black and information about the type of hard drive positioned underneath, which would not have been necessary for optical reasons.
The fact that the external hard drive is still convincing from a purely visual point of view is thanks to its unusual design, which is a bit reminiscent of a shipping container and thus skilfully stands out from the competition.
The WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive also has no weaknesses in terms of processing quality: The Housing consists of robust plastic and makes a very valuable impression. Western Digital has apparently given some thought to this – because a hard drive that is primarily intended to appeal to gamers is of course often taken to friends or acquaintances. Since all the individual parts of the hard drive are very well connected and sealed, the good piece can fall on the floor without becoming unusable - but this does not mean that you can throw the drive around without hesitation. We also liked the slim dimensions of the hard drive, which are just 118 x 88 x 12.8 mm. In combination with a weight of only 140 g, it is therefore ideal for transport from A to B. On the other hand, if you want to position the WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive permanently in a fixed place, the rubber feet mounted on the underside prove useful, as they do not allow the plate to slip uncontrollably over the Table can hike.
Hardware
The WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive is optionally available with a storage capacity of 2 TB, 4TB or 5TB available. The manufacturer specifies a value of 130 MBit/s as the maximum write speed, which is perfectly fine for an HDD. Of course, it is important that the customer can rely on this information, because not all external hard drives actually deliver the promised top speeds in the practical test. In the case of the WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive, however, you don't have to worry: Our speed test showed that the specified value of around 131 MBit/s is even slightly exceeded when reading, and the writing speed is also a very good 126 MBit /s.
What is noticeable, however, is that although large files are transferred very quickly, the hard disk works somewhat more slowly, especially with a large number of different small files. If you only use the disk on a game console, this small shortcoming should hardly be noticeable.

Using the WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive is both at the XBOX One, as well as on the PlayStation: If you connect the external hard drive with the PlayStation 4 via one of the two USB ports, you will immediately be asked whether the connected hard drive should be used to expand the internal storage space.
Before this is possible, the hard drive has to be formatted. It should be noted here that the disk cannot simply be connected to a PC or to an XBOX afterwards - because you would have to format it again first. Since the PlayStation 4 is also equipped with an HDD hard drive, you don't have to be prepared for slower storage speeds. A similar picture emerges with the XBOX One: Here, too, the hard drive can be conveniently connected via USB and used as external storage space after formatting, and you don't have to adjust to slower storage speeds.
Interesting to know: According to the manufacturer, around 128 complete games can be stored on the WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive - this specification refers to an average file size of 32 GB.
The pleasantly quiet working noise of the WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive also deserves a positive mention: You hardly hear any noise when playing, which ideally allows you to concentrate perfectly on the game - only a certain degree of vibration of the disk cannot be denied. However, it is somewhat strange that Western Digital specifies a maximum operating temperature of 35 degrees Celsius for this hard drive. Especially in the hot summer months, it can get significantly warmer in an attic apartment, which is why one can be quite surprised about this strange limit. The manufacturer probably just wanted to be on the safe side, although of course they still give their customers a 3-year guarantee on the product.
By the way: The hard drive itself reaches a temperature of around 34 degrees under continuous operation. In our opinion, this is a very good value, since many external hard drives become significantly warmer.

The WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive was convincing across the board in our test. With a speed in the range of around 130 Mbit/s for reading and writing, it is fast enough for a classic HDD, and you don't have to rely on slower writing speeds on the PlayStation 4 or the XBOX One than when using the set external memory. The design of the WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive is not only very pretty to look at, but also has optimal processing quality in combination with exemplary robustness - so the disk cannot be harmed even by accidental falls on the floor.
Of course, you can use the hard drive not only in combination with a game console, but also with a computer - in addition to the classic Windows PC, the Mac is also supported. The WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive collects further plus points through its very simple handling and its very easy connection without a cumbersome power supply unit, the pleasantly quiet working noise and the exemplary heat development are also impressive. In terms of price, the WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive is in the middle range: If you decide on the version with 4 TB, you get the gigabyte for 2,5 cents, with the 5 TB version even for 2,4 cents.
All in all, we can warmly recommend the WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive to all demanding gamers.
