WD My Book review

Most external hard drives come with a storage capacity between 2 and 4 TB. For many users, this is absolutely sufficient - but some are looking for a model with significantly more storage space, which, for example, enables the storage of complete photo and game collections. A popular disk in this area is the external HDD My Book from Wester Digital, which we have examined closely for you.

What's in the box

The scope of delivery of the WD My Book includes pretty much everything you would expect from an external hard drive. In addition to the record itself, there are also ones in the box Power Supplies, a USB 3.0 cable and a quick start guide. Fortunately, the manufacturer has also included a large software package consisting of the programs WD Security, WD Backup and WD Utilities.

WD Backup automatically transfers files from PC to hard drive, while WD Drive Utilities helps manage them. WB Security encrypts the sensitive data on request and initiates automatic destruction if the associated key has been entered incorrectly too often.

processing / design

The WD My Book is a hard drive that is placed standing up. It comes in a very elegant black paint job, which looks quite handsome, but it's not a real visual highlight (at least in our eyes). Has on the back of the plate Western Digital The USB port and the connection for the power supply are built in, but there is no on/off switch here. Unfortunately, this is a clear disadvantage, because the disk runs immediately after it is connected and automatically goes into stand-by mode as soon as there is no access for a certain period of time.

It is striking that the WD My Book comes with comparatively bulky dimensions: It is a proud 17 cm high and 14 cm deep, and it is almost 4 cm wide. It is therefore not suitable for permanent transport from A to B, also in view of its weight of around one kilogram. Instead, it should be set up permanently in one place. On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with the actual processing quality of the WB My Book, since the Housing makes a very robust and valuable impression on us. Even small rubberized anti-slip feet on the underside of the plate, which ensure optimal standing on the Desk happily, the manufacturer thought.

Hardware

With the WD My Book, Western Digital has taken great pains to market the model in almost all sizes. If you don't need too much storage space, you can opt for the 3 or 4 TB version, but the disk can also be purchased with a full 18 TB if you wish. The WD My Book also makes a good impression in terms of its read and write speeds, although this obviously cannot be compared with the significantly faster rates of an SSD. Our measurements showed a read speed of around 208 MB/s and a write speed of around 212 MB/s, which should be completely sufficient for copying most data.

Other

It is worth mentioning that the WD My Book comes with the pre-formatted exFAT file system, but reformatting and setting up multiple partitions is not a problem. The extremely pleasant operating noise of the hard drive, which is almost completely unnoticeable when in use, should also be positively emphasized. On the other hand, we didn't like the fact that the external HDD doesn't have a modern USB 3.2 connection, but "only" the USB 3.0 connection, which is no longer quite up-to-date. In addition, it is also a micro-USB connection type, which is otherwise only known from smaller 2,5-inch hard drives.
If you use several hard drives at the same time, all of which have a classic USB connection, you could be annoyed because you have to work with two different cables from now on.

And finally ...

The WD My Book is a very good external HDD hard drive that is suitable for stationary use in the office or at another fixed location. It convinces with high-quality workmanship and a timeless design and is ideally delivered directly with the appropriate software for data encryption and for performing backups. We were also impressed by the very good read and write speeds for an HDD, both of which are above 200 MBytes/s - there is definitely nothing to complain about here. If you are looking for an external hard drive with a lot of storage space, you really can't go wrong with this model.

However, you should definitely compare the prices of the individual models before you buy them: At the time of our test, for example, the version with 4 TB of storage space was cheaper than the 3 TB version.
