Verbatim Store 'n' Go Secure SSD Review

With the Store 'n' Go Secure SSD hard drive, the renowned company Verbatim brought a high-performance hard drive onto the market, which is primarily aimed at users for whom the security of their personal data is particularly important. But has the manufacturer of its hard disk also provided decent read and write speeds in addition to data security? We took a closer look at the Store 'n' Go Secure and clarify in our following test report whether the purchase is worthwhile.

What's in the box

Of course, the scope of delivery of the Verbatim Store 'n' Go Secure SSD not only includes the hard drive itself, but also a suitable USB-C to USB-A cable, which enables easy connection. A USB-A to USB-C adapter is also included, which should ensure that the hard drive can actually be connected to any PC or laptop. Verbatim also gives the buyer a useful backup software from Nero, with the help of which all directories and files on the computer or laptop can be backed up automatically at a desired time - the program only runs on Windows PCs and laptops, however.

processing / design

The design of the Verbatim Store 'n' Go Secure SSD definitely knows how to please: Verbatim has integrated a number field with a total of 12 buttons directly on the front so that strangers can immediately see that the content on this hard drive is most likely encrypted. about which the user die Encryption on and off - more on that later. Both the keypad and the entire Housing of the hard disk have a very good processing quality, due to a combination of plastic and aluminum, the hard disk is also light and robust simultaneously. In fact, the term "light" is even an understatement, because with a weight of just 40 g, it almost floats in your pocket - where, thanks to its compact dimensions of 9 x 4.5 x 1 cm, it can easily be stowed away.

Hardware

The Verbatim Store 'n' Go Secure is an SSD hard drive that, in combination with a USB 3.1 Gen 1 connection, achieves impressive read and write speeds that any HDD can only hide behind. However, not too many XL files find a place here, because the Store 'n' Go Secure only has a storage space of 256 GB - which is why it is probably best suited for photographers who can store tons of photos here.

Now we come to the heart of the Verbatim Store 'n' Go Secure SSD in the form of the built-in data encryption. This is a powerful AES 256-bit hardware encryption that encrypts all files stored on the hard drive in real time and thus makes them inaccessible to strangers. A numeric code that you can think of yourself and then enter using the attached numeric keys provides additional protection during encryption. The said password can consist of a maximum of 12 digits and should never be forgotten - otherwise access to the files contained is no longer possible.

  • EXTREMELY QUIET: Verbatim's portable SSD contains no moving...

Unfortunately, this is exactly where the biggest point of criticism of the Verbatim Store 'n' Go Secure SSD lies dormant: There is no option to access the contents of the disk after the wrong password has been entered 20 times in a row - neither in the form of a PUK number, nor in the form of a master password from the manufacturer or alternative rescue software. If the password has actually been entered incorrectly 20 times in a row, the hard disk will even initiate self-destruction by irrevocably deleting all stored data. It is therefore to be hoped that there are no "jokers" among your friends who want to do exactly this and intentionally enter the wrong password 20 times.

It should also be noted at this point that an absolutely uncrackable password should actually consist of numbers, lower and upper case letters and special characters, but only numbers can be used here. On the other hand, it is positive that the password is entered directly via the hard disk and therefore cannot end up in the PC's cache, for example.

Other

A great advantage of the Verbatim Store 'n' Go Secure SSD lies in the fact that the hard drive can be used on computers and laptops with the Windows operating system, as well as on the Mac can be used. If you want, you can alternatively connect the disk to your home television for recording TV programs, which is not possible with regularly encrypted data carriers. However, whether one will actually make use of this function is relatively questionable, because who wants to decrypt their connected hard drive every time they switch on the television?

Although the integrated numeric keys look pretty cool at first glance, you should know that unfortunately they are not against dust, dirt and liquids are protected. So if you often carry the record around with you, you will probably have to reckon with the fact that the keys don't look quite as pretty after a while.

The actual use of the number keys could also lead to one or the other problem: The pressure points of the digits are not particularly pronounced, which in the worst case could lead to the wrong password being entered. It's also a bit annoying that the hard drive doesn't inform its owner that the password has been entered incorrectly 20 times - although this would certainly have been possible via an integrated LED light. So the user has no choice but to count diligently and hope that he still has one or two attempts before the automatic deletion is initiated.

Not exactly practical either: If you decrypt the hard drive and then lock it again a short time later using the lock button, it cannot be unlocked again immediately by entering a password. Before that, you have to unplug the USB cable and then plug it back in – which makes the unlocking process unnecessarily complicated.

And finally ...

The Verbatim Store 'n' Go Secure is primarily aimed at people who want to protect their files on an external hard drive from prying eyes as best as possible - because the AES 256-bit encryption that is used, including entering a password, strangers do not have the Hint of a chance to see the contents of the record. A big advantage of the SSD is certainly its enormous speed, with which even large data can be transferred quickly, but with a storage capacity of just 256 GB, it is a bit poorly equipped compared to many other external hard drives. Unfortunately, using the number keys to encrypt and decrypt the hard drive still has one or two teething problems, and the irrevocable destruction of all data after entering the wrong password 20 times proves to be an unnecessarily drastic reaction.

Ultimately, when buying the Verbatim Store 'n' Go Secure SSD, you have to weigh up whether you really need the integrated encryption or whether you would rather opt for a classic SSD model, which you encrypt manually using professional encryption software - this would be in Considering the price in combination with the available storage space, it is in most cases the significantly cheaper choice.
