Transcend StoreJet

Small, compact and shockproof – this is how the Transcend StoreJet HDD hard drive best describe. But can the model, which immediately catches the eye with its striking green stripe, also convince in terms of its performance? We wanted to know more about it and took a closer look at the external disk for you.

What's in the box

The Transcend StoreJet hard drive supports the common USB 3.1 Gen 1 interface with USB-C connection, which results in fast speeds - we will clarify exactly how fast later in this article. With regard to the scope of delivery of the hard drive, a positive aspect is the fact that Transcend has not only included a USB-C cable, but also a USB-C to USB-A cable - so the drive can also be connected to older ones without any problems computers are used. It is a pity, however, that the length of the included cable is just 15 cm. You can position the Storejet HDD next to a laptop without any problems, but this length is far too short for a PC standing on the floor.

Design

external hard drives, which are advertised as being particularly resistant to falls and shocks, usually have one problem: Because you Housing must be optimally protected against accidental hits and falls, there is often little scope for an elegant appearance. The Transcend StoreJet also struggles with its balancing act between visual eye-catcher and functional workmanship, but it performs significantly better than most of its competitors. Although the surface of the hard disk has a special rubber coating that is anything but elegant, it is pleasantly non-slip, which means that the disk cannot accidentally fall out of your hand - and if it does, it pulls thanks to the integrated anti-shock technology no damage whatsoever. An internal shock absorber as well as that robust Hard-shell housing, in combination with the silicone rubber used for the rubber coating, contribute to the fact that the Transcend Storejet even meets the drop test standards of the US military - which by no means every hard drive can claim.

The fact that the Transcend StoreJet is a real eye-catcher despite its functional design is mainly due to its bright green elements, which significantly enhance the look of the otherwise anthracite-colored hard disk. A round button that also functions as a status LED is also nicely staged: If the external hard drive connected to a modern USB 3.0 port, the button lights up blue, while with a USB 2.0 port it glows in red-orange.

Hardware

Anyone who chooses the Transcend StoreJet has the choice of whether to use the robust hard drive prefer to purchase with 1 TB, 2 TB or 4 TB. Of course, the selected storage capacity has no influence on the transmission speed: HDD hard disks work on average with up to 130 MB/s - but only models with a speed of 7.200 revolutions per minute. However, the Transcend Storejet only achieves 5.400 revolutions per minute and thus also a lower write speed: This is around 88 MB/s in the maximum range and an average of 69,1 MB/s. For a hard drive of this class, these rates are absolutely fine. Those who prefer faster speeds should look for a SSD hard drive look around, which is also significantly more expensive to buy than an HDD.

An innovative feature of the Transcend StoreJet is the button mentioned above, which lights up blue or red-orange after it is connected to the PC. It not only serves as a status LED, but primarily to carry out an automatic backup. In order for this to be possible, the associated Transcend Elite software must first be installed. Unfortunately, there is no information about this software in the operating manual that came with the hard drive - and even with the necessary background knowledge, the backup feature proves to be expandable with regard to the functions offered.

Other

We noticed two things in our Transcend Storejet test. First of all, there is the power connection on the back of the hard drive, which is actually not needed at all. In the unlikely event that the existing USB port is not sufficient to supply the drive with power, the connection via mini-USB can be used as a separate power source - but this was not even remotely necessary in our test.

The second conspicuousness is the sleep mode, into which the hard disk automatically falls as soon as it is not used for a longer period of time. In this so-called idle state, the Storejet has an extremely manageable power consumption of only 1,1 watts - in power mode, on the other hand, it proves to be very power-hungry.

So that you don't have to worry about sensitive data falling into the wrong hands after losing the hard drive, Transcend also offers AES-256 encryption for the Storejet HDD.
This is carried out using the Transcend RecoveRx software included in the scope of delivery, which is quite easy to use and ensures unbreakable encryption of the hard drive in no time at all. Of course, you don't necessarily have to access the included software, but can instead rely on common alternatives such as VeraCrypt leave.

And finally ...

If you are looking for a robust external hard drive that will not have any problems with knocks, bumps or an accidental fall, the Transcend StoreJet is guaranteed to get your money's worth thanks to its integrated suspension system. However, if you attach great importance to a particularly fast transmission speed, the model proves to be a bit too slow even for an HDD hard disk - it only manages an average of 88 MB/s at its peak. The built-in button for an automatic backup, on the other hand, should be seen more as a kind of gimmick, since the associated software simply lacks individual setting options. In our opinion, that's a bit of a shame, because there definitely could have been more here. Speaking of more: Even the only 15 cm long connection cable would certainly not have hurt a centimeter or two more, as this would ensure greater flexibility.

On the other hand, the HDD hard disk secures a plus point for its pleasantly quiet working noise, which is almost completely unnoticeable due to the robust housing construction alone. The price-performance ratio is also impressive: With the 4 TB variant, you get a gigabyte for an affordable 2,9 cents.
