What's in the box

The scope of delivery of the Toshiba Canvio Gaming is rather manageable, but includes all important components. In addition to the plate itself, a USB-A cable is included, which is ideal for connecting to a PlayStation or an XBOX - the very consoles that Toshiba makes theirs for external hard drive particularly advertised. Of course, since the Toshiba Canvio Gaming can also be connected to conventional computers and laptops, it would have been nice if the manufacturer had also included a USB-C cable with his board. With the alternative offered Toshiba Canvio Flex (Click here for the test report) such a device is included in the scope of delivery despite the almost identical price.

processing / design

With the design of the Canvio Gaming, Toshiba has moved away from the game consoles XBOX One and PlayStation4, because like the two consoles, the external hard drive also comes in an extremely elegant dark paint including a black finish. In addition, the manufacturer is of course aware that the hard drive should also be used at one or the other gaming party, which is why it was designed to be pleasantly slim with dimensions of just 110 x 79 x 14 mm - in combination with a light weight of only 145 g, it can easily be taken to friends or relatives.

However, it is somewhat annoying that the Toshiba Canvio Gaming, like the Canvio Flex, is not equipped with rubber coatings on the underside, which would enable a secure and non-slip stand.
If you place your game console on the carpet, you shouldn't have any problems with it, but it gets a little more difficult if you place it on a shelf or on a slippery parquet floor. Except for this small flaw, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the design or the processing quality of the hard drive.

Hardware

The Toshiba Canvio Gaming is a 2,5-inch hard drive that comes with a modern USB 3.2 connection, but of course it can also be used with older USB 2.0 connections. The model is available with a memory size of either 1 TB, 2 TB or 4 TB, the latter variant enables storage of up to 100 titles with an average game size of 36 GB, according to the manufacturer. The write and read speeds of the Canvio Gaming are also impressive across the board: the external hard drive achieved an average value of 144 MB/s when writing, and we were even able to measure 148 MB/s when reading. Ideally, an "always-on" mode is also on board, which allows immediate access to the saved games during the next gaming session.

Other

Of course, the Toshiba Canvio Gaming can not only be connected to game consoles, but also to a PC, a Mac or a laptop - and also as an external data medium for storing films, series and other videos that are played back on a Smart TV, this disk is very well suited due to its fast speed.

However, if you want to use the hard drive primarily in combination with a games console, you should note that this is only possible with current consoles such as the PlayStation 4 and the XBOX One will work properly. The disk can also be easily connected to next-generation consoles, i.e. PlayStation 5 and XBOX Series X, and it is also recognized here – however, neither console supports the installation of new titles on an external disk. Conversely, this means that games from the previous generation can be stored on the Canvio Gaming and (if compatible) played on the new console without any problems, which means that there should be enough space for new titles on the actual main memory of the new console.

By the way: When playing on the PC, there is a similar problem with the Canvio Gaming, since new games only work together with a connected SSD as a data carrier.

And finally ...

If you are looking for a fast external hard drive to connect to the games console, you are guaranteed to get your money's worth with the extremely exemplary working and at the same time stylishly staged Canvio Gaming from Toshiba. However, only if you own a PS4 or an XBOX One, because with the respective successors it is no longer possible to install new games on an external disk.

In addition to the excellent performance of the hard drive, its price-performance ratio is also convincing: if you decide on the variant with 4 TB, you only pay 2,5 cents per gigabyte of storage.
