Visually, the Expansion Portable is similar to the Slim Portable, which is currently the thinnest at 9,6 millimeters external hard drive is on the market. The Expansion Portable is not quite as thin at 15.mm, but it is also very handy and space-saving.
The Housing The 2,5-inch hard drive is completely black, and “Seagate” is printed in small white letters on the top. The edges and columns are cleanly finished, there is nothing to complain about here. The data cable can also be easily plugged into the corresponding connection, and the work was done neatly here too. However, what is immediately noticeable when you first pick it up is that the hard drive looks very light. This is certainly also due to the plastic case, which makes the hard drive appear a little less high quality.
Due to the smooth plastic surface, the hard drive slips on flat surfaces such as a Desk very easy. Unfortunately, rubber knobs for a better grip were not used here.
There is a small blue LED on the top, which signals whether the hard drive is currently working. The LED is very bright, but due to its size it is by no means annoying.
Hardware
In our test device was one Seagate ST500LT012-9WS142 installed. This 2,5 inch hard drive operates at a speed of RPM 5400 and owns one Buffer of 16MB. This gives it a decisive advantage over many other 2,5 inch hard drives, which only have an 8 MB buffer. The Portable Expansion is available with 500 GB and 1 TB Storage.
The hard disk is delivered ex works in NTFS format, which should apply to most users. The driver installation worked on our test device without any problems. It only took a few seconds for Windows 7 to find and install the appropriate driver. We were then able to start using the data carrier immediately.
The heat development of the hard drive stayed at average 28 degree within limits. The hard disk is also very quiet when in use, so that it was actually not noticeable. With approximately. 30 centimeters the USB cable is relatively short, so the hard drive must always be used close to the respective device during operation.

Conclusion
