Seagate One Touch review

Seagate One Touch, which is marketed under the model number STKB2000400, the well-known company Seagate from Ireland has put a very compact hard disk on the market, which knows how to convince at first glance with its very stylish design. But can the model also convince with exemplary read and write speeds? We will tell you in our following test report.

What's in the box

As with most external hard drives, the scope of delivery of the Seagate One Touch is relatively manageable. In addition to the disk itself, a USB 3.2 (Gen 1) cable is included, which fortunately is also pleasantly long - which is by no means the case with every external hard drive. In addition, the scope of delivery includes a 4-month trial subscription for Adobe Creative Cloud Photo, which allows access to Photoshop and Lightroom within this period.

Another subscription, this time for a whole year, is also included for Mylio Creative: This is an app with which you can, for example, create a lively calendar from a wide variety of photos. The scope of delivery is rounded off by a minimalist quick start guide with the most important information on using the hard drive.

processing / design

The Irish company Seagate is known for giving its in-house hard drives an attractive design. Of course, this also applies to the Seagte One Touch: It comes with a textured metal surface that really looks very modern and harmonises perfectly with modern laptops. A tiny LED light can be seen in the upper left corner, which lights up as soon as the hard drive is connected, while the manufacturer's typical logo is printed in the upper right corner. The compact dimensions of the hard disk are also really impressive, because at 12 x 78 x 115 mm it is so handy that it can also be carried in a backpack, handbag and even in most trouser pockets without any problems - thanks to a weight of just 148 g it is also hardly noticeable. There is also nothing wrong with the processing quality of the Seagate One Touch hard drive: As usual, the manufacturer shows its best side here.

It is striking that the hard drive does not have an on/off switch. Although this is not absolutely necessary due to the automatic switch-off after a long period of non-use, there should still be people who value such a detail. It would also have been nice if Seagate had given the One Touch rubberized feet: Since the surface of the hard drive is relatively smooth, it can quickly move back and forth on smooth surfaces.

Normally, manufacturers of external hard drives are happy to specify the maximum read and write speeds of their products that are as impressive as possible. In the case of the Seagate One Touch, however, this looks a bit different, because the manufacturer's official product sheet strangely doesn't contain any more precise information about the official values. The only thing that is even more astonishing is the fact that Seagate's telephone support team cannot provide any information about the maximum speed, since this value is "not available" according to their own statement. I'm sorry, what? Shouldn't the manufacturer of a hard disk know how fast it is?

When asked, we were told that the speed of an external hard drive would depend on the local conditions, such as the existing USB connection. We already knew this, of course, but it would still have been nice to have an official guideline before measuring the speed of the record itself.

Said and done. After connecting the Seagate One Touch to our test laptop, we were able to achieve good read and write speeds, which the company really shouldn't be ashamed of.
The external hard drive achieves a very good write speed of 120 MB/s, and we also measured a good 120 MB/s for the read speed. Of course, hard drives with SSD technology are much faster, but they are also significantly more expensive to buy.

Other

The Seagate One Touch convinces with its easy handling, since it is basically ready for use immediately after connecting to the PC or laptop. In addition, not only devices with the operating system Windows, but also Mac computers are supported - without prior formatting of the hard drive. A practical feature that optimally complements the hard drive is the Seagate Toolkit: This enables additional on-demand backup of the stored data and, if desired, an hourly, daily, weekly or monthly backup.

Another feature, which will probably hardly be used anyway, is the so-called "rescue service for data recovery" that Seagate offers for this hard drive. Should it happen within the first two years after purchase that access to the saved data is no longer possible for a variety of reasons, Seagate Support offers the buyer to restore this data. Of course, this inevitably brings us to the question of how to get hold of your data that is no longer available after 2 years and a week. From our point of view, this special kind of customer loyalty seems to be just a clever attempt to dissuade the buyer from exchanging his hard drive within the two-year warranty period - a quick data recovery seems to be the cheaper option here, at least from the company's point of view.

Speaking of data: It would of course have been nice if Seagate had given the hard drive an integrated encryption option. Unfortunately, since this is missing, you have to look for separate alternatives such as VeraCrypt & Co look around to protect the stored data from the overly curious eyes of his fellow human beings.

And finally ...

The Seagate One Touch not only convinces with a very elegant appearance in combination with a slim size and a handy weight: The read and write speeds are also quite impressive for an HDD. The low purchase price also definitely speaks for this hard drive, because with the 4 TB version you only pay 2 cents per GB. It is a pity, however, that Seagate has not given this model any data encryption and has also dispensed with practical rubber feet for a better grip. Otherwise, there is nothing to complain about here, so we can absolutely recommend this small but fine hard drive.
