Review of the Seagate BarraCuda Fast SSD
With the BarraCuda Fast SSD, the Irish company has launched an external SSD hard drive that already praises its speed in the name and is primarily intended for demanding gamers due to its successful design. What's in the box
The scope of delivery shows the Seagate BarraCuda Fast SSD at its best. In addition to the hard drive itself, the manufacturer has not only thought of a modern USB-C cable, but also an additional USB-C-to-A cable. The latter allows the buyer to use the plate on an older USB-A port as well. In addition, the scope of delivery also includes a user manual and a two-month membership for the Adobe Creative Cloud - if you want to use this, you only have to register the BarraCuda hard drive with Seagate beforehand.

In terms of design, the Seagate BarraCuda Fast SSD is certainly not a milestone, but it still knows how to convince with its simple and modern look. The external plate is completely black and has a rough surface. The attached Seagate logo provides color accents with its white paint. The visual highlight, however, appears as soon as the BarraCuda is plugged into the USB port: Then the edge of the upper, slightly raised element of the hard drive appears, which shines in a pretty green with the help of built-in LEDs - that's what makes it so special a lot late in the evening.
Fortunately, the processing quality of the Seagate BarraCuda SSD is also impressive across the board: The disk is almost entirely made of plastic, but still makes an extremely robust impression and has no problems with minor knocks, bumps or an accidental fall from the Table. Of course you shouldn't overdo it here, but on the whole the sensitive data on the hard drive is optimally protected even when transported in hand luggage. The extremely compact dimensions of just 0.91 x 7.9 x 9.34 cm, which would even allow it to be carried in the trouser pocket if the worst comes to the worst, should also be positively emphasized. Since the Seagate BarraCuda Fast SSD practically only weighs around 140 g, it is almost insignificant when it comes to transport. However, it is a bit of a pity that the manufacturer of its external SSD did not include anti-slip feet on the underside that would ensure a robust stand - the disk unfortunately tends to slide back and forth on smooth surfaces, which is seen in the long run can be a bit annoying.
Hardware
The Seagate BarraCuda Fast SSD is a 2,5 inch hard drive with a modern USB 3.0 connection is equipped. According to the manufacturer, you can look forward to a write speed of up to 500 MB/s and a read speed of up to 540 MB/s with this model. We were able to confirm these values in our measurement, but of course they are only achieved when using a modern USB 3.1 connection. All in all, the speeds achieved are really very good, although Seagate has significantly faster models - such as the Seagate Firecuda. To be fair, however, it must also be said that the model mentioned is significantly more expensive than the Seagate BarraCuda, which actually turns out to be a real bargain in a direct comparison.

The Seagate BarraCuda Fast SSD works with the Plug & Play process, which makes it particularly easy to use: Simply plug it into the existing USB port and the hard drive will be recognized without any annoying installation. In our test, this worked both on a classic Windows PC and on one Mac excellent - so there is nothing to complain about here. However, it is noticeable right from the first use that the supplied USB cable is very short with a length of 45 cm. If you want to place your hard drive right next to your laptop anyway, you won't have any problems with it. However, if the PC is on the floor and the USB inputs are far below on the Housing are attached, the plate must be placed on the floor - where it is unfortunately not well placed due to the lack of anti-slip feet.
The hard drive's surprisingly high heat development, which is noticeable after just a few minutes, is also not particularly good. This isn't a cause for concern, but we've held more powerful drives with cooler casings in our hands. On the other hand, the working noise of the Seagate BarraCuda Fast SSD is hardly noticeable, so that it is suitable for almost every conceivable purpose.
And finally ...
The Seagate BarraCuda Fast SSD not only convinces with its good price-performance ratio, but also with its very high quality of workmanship, a chic design and a good working speed. On the other hand, there are small deductions for the surprisingly high heat development, the lack of non-slip feet and the USB cable that is too short, but the compact dimensions and the pleasantly light weight are appealing.
