Seagate Backup Plus HUB review

Although lightning-fast SSD hard drives have now fallen sharply in price, there is still a high demand for HDD hard drives with as much storage space as possible at affordable prices. For this reason, we take a look at them in our following review Seagate Backup Plus HUB, which is advertised by the manufacturer as the ideal backup solution and also has a small special feature to offer.

Seagate Backup Plus HUB, external hard drive with 2-way USB hub 6TB, 3.5 inch, USB 3.0, PC, Notebook & Mac, incl. 2 years rescue service, model number: STEL6000200
  • One-click mobile backup and custom backup

What's in the box

In addition to the hard disk itself, the scope of delivery also includes a USB 3.0 Cable with micro-type B connector and a very clear user manual. The scope of delivery for most external hard drives ends here, but the Seagate Backup Plus HUB is also included Power Supplies at. actually belong external hard drives with a bulky power supply unit is a thing of the past, since an additional connection to a socket is far too impractical - instead, with most modern records, it is sufficient to simply connect them to the computer via USB. So Seagate takes a step backwards here, which certainly won't appeal to every potential buyer.

processing / design

While many manufacturers attach great importance to the fact that their external hard drives are becoming smaller and smaller and are therefore ideal for easy transport from A to B, Seagate is once again swimming against the tide with the Backup Plus HUB. The hard drive comes with comparatively bulky dimensions of 19,8 x 11,8 x 4,1 cm and is therefore more suitable for permanent storage on the Desk. The Housing makes a valuable impression at first glance - but only with regard to the processing quality. Heavy knocks, falls or contact with moisture or dust are anything but good for the record and should therefore be avoided at all costs - another reason for using the good piece permanently in a fixed place, especially since it also weighs around 1 kg .

The surface, covered with black piano lacquer, makes an elegant impression, but has an annoying disadvantage: It is very susceptible to unsightly fingerprints, which can quickly spoil the pretty look. An important advantage is certainly the rubberized feet on the underside of the hard drive, which contribute to a robust and secure stand - they also ensure that any vibrations are not transmitted to the entire workplace.

Hardware

The Seagate Backup Plus HUB is available in different versions with either 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 or 16 GB of memory - so you can choose between a wide range for the right capacity, which unfortunately is not the case with every external hard drive case is. According to the manufacturer, the model offers a working speed of up to 160 MB/s in terms of working speed, which is the average standard value for an HDD. On the other hand, if you want to transfer a lot of data regularly, you should opt for an SSD instead, which has significantly higher speeds of up to 1.000 MB/s.

Of course, we wanted to get our own impression of the prospective working speed of the Seagate Backup Plus HUB - which is why we took a closer look at the delivered values. As with most hard drives, the manufacturer promises faster speeds than we can confirm in our test. The model averages around 138 MB/s when writing and 125 MB/s when reading. Of course, it should be noted that these values can only be achieved with a USB 3.0 connection, for which the hard drive is also designed. Although the Seagate Backup Plus HUB is backwards compatible and can therefore also be used with older USB 2.0 connections without any problems, you have to be prepared for a significantly slower transmission speed here.

A nice feature of the Seagate Backup Plus HUB, which we briefly mentioned at the beginning, is the fact that it contains two integrated USB ports. While one connection is used to connect the hard drive to the PC as usual, the other connection can be used to Smartphone, Tablet PC or to provide another device with USB charging function with new energy. Alternatively, another USB hard drive can be connected via the additional USB input - just in case all USB ports on the PC are occupied again.

Other

The Seagate Backup Plus HUB can be used on both a classic Windows PC and a Mac - if you opt for the latter option, an NTFS driver must first be installed so that the disk can then be used on both devices without reformatting can. On the other hand, we didn't like the fact that the hard drive didn't have a built-in power switch. As a result, it starts automatically every time the computer starts up and can only be switched off by disconnecting it.

And since we're on the subject of negative aspects, we'll throw another one straight into the room: The Seagate Backup Plus HUB unfortunately has a big heat problem, because temperatures in the range of 40 to 42 degrees Celsius are anything but typical when idling. With intensive use of the hard disk, the temperature even rises to up to 50 degrees, which is really no longer celebratory - we would definitely have expected better performance from a well-known manufacturer like Seagte. Unfortunately, the working volume of the hard drive is anything but whisper-quiet, so that some users who have connected the device while working on the PC, for example, will probably quickly feel disturbed.

Our conclusion:

Seagate Backup Plus HUB, external hard drive with 2-way USB hub 6TB, 3.5 inch, USB 3.0, PC, Notebook & Mac, incl. 2 years rescue service, model number: STEL6000200

In our test, the Seagate Backup Plus HUB was only moderately convincing, as the disadvantages of this model unfortunately outweigh the disadvantages. It starts with the extremely bulky dimensions and a clumsy weight of around 1 kg, extends to the not entirely convincing read and write speeds and finally culminates in heat development that is far too strong. An interesting feature is certainly the second USB input, through which you can use your smartphone or a Tablet charge - but unfortunately that alone does not justify the purchase of this hard drive.

Anyone looking for a very reasonably priced HDD hard drive with enough storage space and want to use it permanently in a fixed place, doesn't do too much wrong with the Seagate Backup Plus HUB. However, if you prefer a handy hard drive that can be transported quickly and easily from one place to another, you should definitely choose a different model - such as the extremely compact Samsung T7 Portable SSD, which we have also presented to you in an extensive practical test below took a magnifying glass.
