The basis: a WLAN hard drive

External hard drives with Power Bank are always one thing in the first place: WLAN hard drives, with which you can transfer data wirelessly to the drive or get it from it - they often run with a simple operating system, so that the transfer to smartphones and other mobile devices is also possible without any problems.

The big advantage is, of course, that you have the data available anytime and anywhere, without having to Power Supply to be dependent - because integrated is normally a Battery, which supplies power to the disk.

However, some models also offer the possibility of using the capacity of this battery as a power bank and thus helping the smartphone to get new juice on the go.

What should you look for in an external hard drive with power bank?

There is not much to say about these devices, since they are similar in principle and not many of these hard drives are available - the decision is then usually made based on factors that primarily affect their function as a WLAN hard drive. And we'll go into more detail on that in another category.

If you want to use the external hard drive regularly as a power bank, there is only one factor that really counts: battery capacity.

Because if not only the record itself but also a mobile end device needs to be supplied with power, then the largest possible battery is of course the trump card - because of course you don't get much out of it if the mobile phone is charged at the end but the record is already completely empty and is therefore no longer usable.

What other factors are important?

In the plates we have tested so far becomes clear: The differences aren't really big and the rivals don't really match each other when it comes to speed - because the transmission speed naturally reaches a limit at a certain point anyway due to the WLAN.

Does an external hard drive with a power bank make sense?

Here we have to differentiate and make a recommendation that we think makes sense - but which everyone has to classify for themselves.

If you are primarily looking for a WLAN hard drive and occasionally need some juice for your smartphone at the end of a long day, this function is really practical and useful.

On the other hand, if you focus on having to fully charge your smartphone every day on the go, you should buy a WiFi hard drive and a separate power bank - because this not only ensures that the drive remains ready for use for longer, but also protects your battery and extends it hence the lifetime.

As a nice extra for occasional charging, an external hard drive with power bank function is very practical - but for the daily power supply of the smartphone on the go, a separate power bank for the WLAN hard drive is the more durable and, in our opinion, more sensible solution.
