TReview of the LaCie Rugged TRIPLE 1TB
The external hard drive LaCie Rugged Triple is tough. The product name already makes this clear, because when translated from English, rugged means “stable”, “robust” or “hard-wearing”. An aluminum layer protects the data carrier, and there is also a bumper in each corner of the case. The eye-catching orange case is made from durable military-grade 810-F plastic. As a result, the LaCie Rugged Triple should even survive falls from a height of up to two meters. A force of up to 1.000 G can be started. At the software level, personal data is protected using a 256-bit AES encryption system. The impressive energy efficiency at which the Drive Saving up to 40 percent electricity when not in use is another selling point for the LaCie. There will be three sizes, viz 500 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB offered. Our test refers to the LaCie Rugged TRIPLE 1 TB.

This model is an unmistakable outdoor model. You can tell by the particularly robust rubber coating. The strong orange immediately catches the eye, but is probably not for everyone. But the LaCie Rugged Triple 1 TB doesn't even want to win a beauty contest, it signals directly that it stands for a particularly high level of protection for sensitive data. If, for example, an external hard drive is needed to store the images on a photography tour in the mountains, this model is a good choice due to its hard shell. Due to the rugged case with dimensions of 90 mm wide, 28 mm deep and 145 high, you have to plan enough space in your backpack. With a weight of 260 grams, the hard drive also weighs quite a bit. The interfaces at the front have been modernized in the form of FireWire 800 and USB 3.0. For example, a 700 MB video file can be transferred in just seven seconds.
Hardware
The LaCie Rugged Triple 1 TB leaves nothing to be desired when it comes to specifications. Our test model spins at 7.200 RPM, the same goes for the 2 TB edition. Only the smallest level with 500 GB is more leisurely with 5.400 MB. The outdoor hard drive's useful software is great, in addition to the 256-bitEncryption and the power saving mode, there is also a backup wizard. With this, the files can be backed up automatically. On the other hand, the lack of eSATA as a connection option is a pity. A PC with Windows 7 or Windows 8 is specified as the system requirements, but operation with Windows 10 is also possible. Mac OS X is also supported, although compatibility with Linux is not explicitly mentioned, but it is conceivable.

At a price of just over 130 euros, this product is worth investing in for hikers, mountaineers and cyclists. The warranty period is usually two years. Furthermore, the manufacturer provides 10 GB of online storage for one year. This allows you to back up particularly important files again. However, the LaCie Rugged Triple 1 TB is not suitable for the pocket. A suitable bag should be purchased if you only want to take the device with you alone.
Conclusion
The LaCie Rugged Triple in the 1 TB version has largely convinced us. The drive works pleasantly fast and quietly for an HDD. Besides, that is robust Housing a great added value. However, it should be noted that there is no eSATA connection and that you have to allow for enough space in your luggage. The price from 131 euros (at the time of testing in mid-June) corresponds to 0,13 cents per gigabyte, which is quite acceptable for an outdoor model. If you need a little more storage, you can go for the 2 TB edition. However, you should stay away from the smallest version with 500 MB. In addition to the small storage space, this disk works much more slowly.
