G-Technology G-Drive Mobile SSD R-Series review

With the G-Drive Mobile, the company known for its high-quality hard drives stops G Technology one by their own admission extremely fast external SSD hard drive ready, which has no problems whatsoever with blows and bumps as well as with water contact. We wanted to know exactly how fast the external disk works and what special capabilities it brings with it, so we subjected it to an extensive test.

What's in the box

While many modern hard drives only come with a USB-C cable for connecting to new devices, G-Technology has fortunately also included a USB-C-to-A cable with its G-Drive Mobile. This also enables use on older devices with a USB-A connection that is no longer so common, so that you do not have to buy an additional adapter before using it. Also included in the scope of delivery is a manual in which the most important advantages of the plate are described in an understandable way.

processing / design

The G-Technology G-Drive Mobile SSD R-Series proves to be a real eye-catcher right from the first appraisal. The 11.7 × 8.0 × 1.7 cm large plate comes in a timeless black finish, the silver side parts made of plastic and the large G, which of course stands for G-Technology, are perfectly matched to this.

The built-in aluminum heat sink provides color accents, and its pretty blue-green paintwork is visible through the integrated cooling fins. Incidentally, this contributes to the fact that the hard disk does not overheat, even with very intensive use, and in this way delivers a permanently constant performance.

In our opinion, there is also nothing to complain about in terms of the hard drive's processing quality. The Housing, which consists largely of aluminum, makes an extremely robust and high-quality impression, and thanks to the non-slip surface coating, the plate also sits perfectly in the hand. In this context, it is also worth emphasizing the fact that G Technology has given the G-Drive Mobile impressive protection against knocks and bumps. The model has an excellent shock resistance rating of up to 500 kg and falls from a height of up to 3 m without any problems. Even water and dust can hardly harm the external SSD, as it is equipped with protection class IP67. Temporary submersion under water and direct contact with dust are therefore no problem for the good piece.

Hardware

The G-Technology G-Drive Mobile SSD R-Series comes with a modern USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface and is available with a storage capacity of 500 GB, 1 TB or 2 TB available. What is striking, however, is that the variant with 2 TB At the time of our test, it was significantly more expensive than two individual plates each 1 TB There was storage space - which is why the latter is, at least currently, the more recommended choice.

In terms of speed, the manufacturer promises data transfers of up to 560 MBytes/s, which would enable fast data transfer without long waiting times for larger files. Unfortunately, the read and write rates fell in our test not quite as high, but they still impress with 518 MB/s reading and 474 MB/s writing. The prerequisite for the speeds mentioned is of course the use of a USB-C connection. If the G-Technology G-Drive Mobile SSD R-Series is operated on a USB-A port, you have to be content with around 340 MB/s when writing and 345 MB/s when reading.

Other

That the G-Technology G-Drive Mobile SSD R-Series is an extremely robust hard drive we already mentioned at the beginning that it has no problems whatsoever with hits, bumps and falls, as well as dust and water. What is really praiseworthy, however, is that the manufacturer offers a 5-year guarantee on this model, which is a whopping 3 years ahead of the legal requirement - something like this is very rare these days.

However, it would have been nice if G-Technology had shown itself to be so generous with the length of the included cable, because this is extremely short at just under 7 cm. If you want to put the plate next to your laptop, you won't have a problem with this, but the mini cable proves to be problematic when using it on a PC. To be honest, we were also hoping for a little more from the built-in heat sink - after all, a feature that the manufacturer advertises particularly well. In continuous operation, the G-Technology G-Drive Mobile SSD R-Series actually gets quite warm, although no critical limits are exceeded.

And finally ...

The G-Technology G-Drive Mobile SSD R-Series does not quite come close to the values promised by the manufacturer in terms of speed, but it still scores with excellent reading and writing performance. The processing quality of the external SSD is excellent, since it cannot be harmed by hard knocks or bumps, and it is even protected against falls from a height of up to 3 m. The G-Drive Mobile does have minor weaknesses, such as a connection cable that is much too short and a housing that gets quite warm despite the built-in heat sink, but all in all we can give a clear purchase recommendation for this stylish model.
