G-Technology G-DRIVE put to the test

Almost all external hard drives that can currently be found on the market lose large storage capacities 2 TB or more with yourself. However, this is often not enough for photographers, professional filmmakers or similar owners of large amounts of data: They are looking for a disk with even more storage space. The G-DRIVE from the house G Technology proves to be an excellent choice in this case - it is available with up to 18 TB. However, our test report will tell you whether the writing and reading speed of the HDD is also convincing.

What's in the box

G-Technology has apparently spared no expense or effort when it came to the scope of delivery: in addition to the hard drive itself, the box not only contains a USB cable and a USB-C-to-A cable for connecting to older computers and laptops, but also one external Power Supplies and an associated power cord. A concise manual, in which the most important basics and functions of the G-DRIVE are described, harmoniously rounds off the scope of delivery.

processing / design

From a purely visual point of view, the G-DRIVE is a real eye-catcher: The external HDD comes in a modern and timeless at the same time Housing in silver, which is printed with a capital G. A G can also be found on the front of the plate, this is even illuminated and thus gives it a particularly cool charm.

Even the build quality can feel like you would expect from home G Technology is used to: plastic was used to manufacture the entire housing, which is known for its high level of robustness in combination with a pleasantly light weight. At least the latter criterion is not really met by the G-DRIVE: With a weight of around one kilogram, it is significantly heavier than some of its competitors and therefore not particularly well suited for permanent transport - and also the dimensions of 12.8 x 19.6 x 3.5 cm could have been a bit more compact.

We really liked the fact that the manufacturer of the G-DRIVE included non-slip feet on the underside: This means that the hard drive is always stable, even on slippery surfaces. There is another plus point for the guarantee: Contrary to what is required by law, G-Technology gives this model a three-year guarantee - which is one year longer than necessary

Hardware

As already mentioned, the G-Technology G-DRIVE is available with impressive storage capacities. The series starts with a very strong 4 TB, continues with 6 TB and 10 TB and finally ends with an excellent 14 TB and 18 TB.

The actual disk is a 3,5-inch model with a USB 3.1 connection, which is still from the first generation, and the manufacturer also promises a transfer speed of up to 195 MB/s. Of course we wanted to know more about that and ran the G-DRIVE through a speed test. The result was not 195 MB, but still a very good 170 MB. Of course, the term “very good” only refers to HDD hard drives, because the G-DRIVE understandably cannot even come close to keeping up with an SSD that is as fast as an arrow.

Other

The G-Technology G-DRIVE has another very special feature that owners of a notebook are guaranteed to appreciate: It is equipped with an integrated power supply, which can also be used to power compatible notebooks during the Data transmission can be charged. A power of 45 watts is achieved, which is completely sufficient for many standard notebooks. For the Apple MacBook Pro On the other hand, it shouldn't - but with this model it should at least be possible to maintain the current battery level. The classic MacBook, on the other hand, only consumes 29 watts, so this device can be perfectly supplied with new energy.

It is a pity, however, that G-Technology does not integrate its G-DRIVE Encryption has given on the way. So if you want to be sure that the data stored on the hard drive is really protected from prying eyes, you have to use external programs such as VeraCrypt fall back on.

Our conclusion:

If you are looking for the cheapest possible HDD hard disk with sufficient storage space, you will certainly be enthusiastic about the H-DRIVE from G-Technology, because the gigabyte is available here for an affordable 2,6 cents - at the time of ours Tests in the form of the 14 TB variant. The appealing design of the G-DRIVE and its excellent workmanship are also impressive across the board, and the integrated charging option for compatible notebooks has also proven to be extremely practical. For an HDD hard disk, this model delivers very good values with transfer speeds of around 175 MBytes/s, but if you need significantly more speed, you should go to the G-Technology G-Drive Mobile SSD R-Series to grab.
