ADATA DashDrive Air AE800 review

DashDrive Air AE800 brings ADATA launched its first WLAN hard drive. The AE400 is also one too wifi hard drive, but this offers a few more functions that go beyond a “normal” WiFi hard drive. These include, for example, an SD card slot and a USB port for additional storage. Both devices have a power bank function, Smartphones can therefore be charged here without any problems. ADATA promises with the AE800 that up to 3 users can stream 1080p videos from the hard drive at the same time without problems. You can read how well the hard drive works in our following test report.

processing / design

With a weight of approx. 280g the hard drive initially feels quite heavy when it is picked up for the first time. In combination with the smooth, well-made surface, the hard drive feels very valuable. Shiny plastic is used on both the top and bottom. It is slightly mirrored on the sides, which looks natural, but unfortunately is also very prone to grease stains and fingerprints. There are 4 rubber nubs on the underside to prevent sliding on the Desk to prevent.

The on/off button is embedded on the left side, the USB charging port and USB connection are located on the front. On the top of the case, next to the lettering, there are 4 small LEDs including symbols, which indicate the current status of the hard disk:

  • Battery
  • Power
  • Active transfer
  • WiFi

The hard drive's edges are very well made, nothing cracks and the gaps fit on all sides.

Hardware

One was installed in our test device Toshiba MQ01ABF050 500GB. The hard drive has one 8MB buffer and works with 5400 revolutions per minute. In our test we could determine a maximum working temperature of 32 degrees. The hard disk also works very quietly and was not audible even with very low background noise.

Setup and use of the app

Setting up and using the app was very easy for us and went quickly. If you use the hard drive via Smartphone or Tablet If you want to use it, search for “DashDrive Air Elite” in the app store (Android and iOS). After installation, simply start the app and activate the WLAN mode on the hard drive. To do this, the USB connection to the hard drive must be disconnected and the ON button on the left must be pressed. The connection can then be established, the input options are self-explanatory, the password can be found in the Quick Start Guide.

After the connection has been successfully established, the data can be easily uploaded or downloaded. This worked without any problems in the test and worked with several image files and some larger video files without any problems. Streaming a 1080p MKV file was also no problem. This could also be played on the iPad without any problems.

Power bank function

The DashDrive Air AE800 is equipped with a power bank function, which allows you to charge the battery of your smartphone or Tablets charge on the go and at the same time access your data on the go. According to the manufacturer, the Li-Polymer battery with 5200 mAh enables a normal smartphone battery to be charged twice. Enough to easily bridge longer train journeys or flights. In the test, this was possible without any problems. Once plugged in, the smartphone can be charged immediately. It should be noted, however, that the appropriate cable is not included and that the original charging cable for your smartphone/tablet should therefore be carried with you.

Conclusion

Overall, we really liked the hard drive. Setting up the DashDrive Air AE800 is super easy, and the app is extremely easy to use. Our test device was extremely well made, there was nothing to complain about here. The transmission speed via USB cable is in the middle, but the focus here is of course more on wireless transmission and this went smoothly and very satisfactorily. All in all, we would highly recommend the ADATA DashDrive Air AE800 to anyone looking for a good WiFi hard drive. A whole clear buy recommendation from us!
