Angelbird SSD2go pocket review

Angelbird SSD2go pocket - Comparison to Seagate Backup Plus Slim portable (2,5 inch)

The still quite unknown Austrian manufacturer angelbird provides us with the SSD2go pocket, a small SSD with a memory of 512 GB. Since the price per GB for SSDs is still quite high at the moment, it is hardly surprising that an SSD400go costs at least €2. In total, Angelbird offers three storage sizes: 128, 256 and 512 GB. We took a closer look at the handy device.

processing / design

The small aluminum body of the SSD2go is small and handy (89,0 ✕ 69,9 ✕ 10,4 mm - 90 g) and fits in any trouser pocket. A simple lettering adorns it Housing, which looks very high-quality and can convince with its feel. There are no apparent ways to open the SSD without using ruthless means. It is therefore not possible to remove the SSD without damaging the housing.

The USB 3.0 cable is very robust and still very stiff after unpacking. Depending on the space situation, the 30 cm long cable can cause problems - because of this rigidity. When connected, the test system reacts immediately to the SSD, the automatic installation via Windows works in a matter of seconds. A small LED is located right next to the USB 3.0 port, which acts as a power and working mode LED.

Angelbird has done without a rubber coating on the underside. The advantage here would have been that the hard disk also lies securely on sloping surfaces. The SSD2go cannot be set up on its side and the floor only differs in color. Speaking of colour: Angelbird manufactures the SSD2go in five different colours, namely blue, grey, orange, red and black. As a nice feature, you can also view the case on the manufacturer's website have it engraved on the back for free. what that robust Housing can withstand everything - without the SSD being affected.

Certainly also worth mentioning: The SSD2go comes with a simple cardboard packaging and paper slipcase, which is pleasantly easy to open.

Hardware

The SSD is specified with 512 GB of memory, but 471 GB can actually be used. It uses MLC (multi level cell) memory cells and is specified with an MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) of 2,000,000 hours. In addition, it should be available for every system (Windows, Linux, Mac and Android) work perfectly. We can confirm that for Windows and Mac. We currently do not have Linux and Android test systems. A noiseless operation is self-evident due to the absence of moving parts. Angelbird promises a manufacturer's warranty of 5 years as standard.

The test device was able to achieve a reading speed of 430 MB/s (on the Mac). This is a top value compared to an HDD. Compared to our previously tested SSDs, this speed is also very convincing.

Conclusion

We particularly liked the pocket format and the simple design, but the price of €400 is a bit deterrent. A home user may have fun with a regular hard drive, but photographers, graphic artists, and people involved in video editing will certainly enjoy it. In terms of speed, the SSD clearly shows its advantages over an HDD. Nevertheless, we have already tested faster SSDs. If you are looking for a robust external SSD that fits easily in your pocket, you can't go wrong with the Angelbird SSD2go pocket - we therefore give our buy recommendation.
