External hard drives with 1 TB in the test
1 TB – this is already one of the standard sizes these days external hard drives and is certainly one of the most popular capacities, especially when it comes to compact hard drives.
This is not least due to the fact that a good compromise between a lot of storage capacity and a very reasonable price is often offered here, since the competition is really huge on this scale - and so you can shoot a bargain or two if you look at the individual manufacturers and compare models.
To make this easier, you can find all of them on this overview page 1TB hard drives, which we have already been able to test and thus a whole range of models - each with its own strengths and some weaknesses.
What you should look out for when buying such a 1 TB external hard drive and which points can be particularly important for the individual user, we want to summarize in the following - the drives can be found in the overview directly below the information text.

Performance matters
Clearly: For most users, what counts above all is the performance when it comes to external hard drives - especially if you compare models from different manufacturers at similar prices, you will of course take a very close look at the performance of the individual drives.
And here there are several points that decide how the transfer speeds and the general performance of the disk are ultimately ordered:
- The RPM. Basically, there are disks with two different speeds, with a faster speed in most cases providing more speed and better performance - but a high speed alone is by no means enough to achieve fast speeds.
- The connection. Of course, the transmission speed also depends to a large extent on the connection used. USB 3.0 is standard today and enables sufficiently fast transfer rates for most users, while USB 2.0 is significantly slower. If you want particularly fast speeds, you should take a closer look at models with a “Thunderbolt” connection.
- The technique. From the components used to the software, the interaction of the entire technology naturally determines how fast the record is in the end - in order to provide a simple overview here, we have of course also taken the "speed" point into account in our test.
The performance of the disk depends entirely on the interaction of several factors - and the more expensive disk is not always the faster one. For the really fast ones 1TB hard drives but of course you have to pay a corresponding price.
Details make the difference
Performance is important and in many cases also decisive, but the records also differ in other respects and often it is small details that make the difference between a solid record and a really good one - although of course every user has different requirements.
If you want to use the record particularly often on the go, you get it 1TB external hard drives also in the small 2,5" format - so the record quickly disappears into your pocket and can be used perfectly portably.
Such models are also available in particularly robust versions, as well as with increased security standards, so that sensitive data can also be transported securely on them and, in the event of loss, are protected from unauthorized access.
Larger disks, on the other hand, often have an external power supply and sometimes bring more speed with them - but they are not nearly as well suited for mobile use.
Which 1 TB external hard drive is the right one?
This question has to be answered individually and of course it depends on what you expect from the record.
If you just want to back up media files or even make a backup of your computer, the only thing that really matters is the appropriate speed and the price is the decisive criterion.
On the other hand, if you want to use the disk a lot on the go or transport particularly sensitive data, you should of course purchase a correspondingly robust or secure disk.
Our test therefore gives an overview of which plate meets which requirements - so that in the end many users will only have to decide between a few models.
And here it is quite legitimate to refer to the good experience with a manufacturer or simply a low price as a decisive argument, as long as the record meets the decisive requirements.
