#2 Fallout 4

In "Fallout 4" the player slips into the role of a survivor who has to fight his way through a post-apocalyptic world. The action takes place in Boston, which was destroyed 200 years ago by a devastating nuclear war.

Together with a cute dog that accompanies you on your travels, you not only have to defend yourself against mutated humans and animals, but also make sure that the radioactive radiation in the air doesn't weaken you too much. In addition to the strong plot, the game's impressive graphics are also convincing across the board.

#3 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Of course, "The Witcher 4" should not be missing in a list of the best role-playing games for the PS3. Anyone who has already loved (or still loves) both of the predecessors will definitely be even more enthusiastic about the last part of the series. As in the first two parts, in Part 3 you also control the character Geralt von Riva, who this time goes in search of his former lover, the sorceress Yennefer von Vengerberg.

The country he crosses during his mission is marked by war and of course the brave hero on his giant has to deal with numerous monsters and dangerous side missions. A really impressively strong RPG - from the first to the last minute.

For many critics, "Persona 5" is nothing more and nothing less than the best role-playing game currently available for the PlayStation 4. The Japanese game is not only very popular in its home country, but has also taken the hearts of European and US role-playing fans by storm. Is it because of the unusual story?

The player takes on the role of a high school student who is able to steal the hearts of evil people in order to make the world a kinder place. In between, you have to fight dark creatures in gigantic dungeons, while above ground you mainly encounter friendly creatures. Anyone who isn't put off by the anime style of the game is guaranteed to fall in love with "Persona 5" quickly.

#5 Horizon: Zero Dawn

"Horizon Zero Dawn" is without a doubt one of the best role-playing games currently available for the PS4. The player finds himself in a distant future that takes place around 1.000 years after the complete disintegration of mankind.

Although there are no longer any signs of civilization and the environment resembles the Stone Age known from stories, the game world is simply outstanding in terms of its graphics. To keep things from being too boring, the player is periodically confronted with gigantic robotic creatures shaped like dinos - but conveniently, the game's hero is at least reasonably well equipped with a bow and arrow to face the danger.

#6 Monster Hunter: World

With "Monster Hunter: World" from Capcom, the actual story of the game takes a back seat, but it's just great fun to hunt down and defeat scary monsters with your character.

The more monsters you kill, the more experience points you collect in the game - these can then be used to continuously improve your equipment. Between fights, you can look forward to discovering magical worlds and enlisting the help of your friends in multiplayer mode.

#7 South Park: The Fractured But Whole

Just like in the TV series, you can also look forward to a good portion of bitter humor in "South Park: The Fractured But Whole" - but it is precisely this component that ultimately makes the game a real hit for the PlayStation 4.

A completely different role-playing game for the PlayStation 4, which differs greatly from classic RPG's, is South Park: The Fractured But Whole. After the predecessor "The Stick of Truth" has blossomed into a real bestseller, Kenny, Cartman, Stan, Kyle and the other residents of the idyllic cartoon town are now reunited. When night falls in South Park, all sorts of rabble roam the streets. But there is a new kid in town who goes by the imaginative name "The New One" and has announced his resistance. Together with the superhero troop "Coon & Friends" it sets out to save South Park from a dark menace.

#8 Dragon Quest XI: Soldiers of Destiny

In parts, the game is reminiscent of Nintendo's classic "The Legend of Zelda", but it also includes a portion of "Final Fantasy" and a good shot of "Secret of Mana". By the way, anyone who knows the latter game is really old ;).

This game certainly doesn't fall into the mainstream category, which is why many PS4 owners may not even know it. No wonder: It is primarily aimed at players who love the good old RPG games with an impressive and clever story and place less value on spectacular graphics. The Japanese game includes magical dragons, knights with swords, an exciting mission full of impressive fights and numerous equally exciting side missions - exactly what makes a real role-playing game.
