Technology for people with disabilities

Dot smart watch

People with a physical or mental disability are benefiting more and more from modern technology. Last but not least, Siri has been a good start. Finally be through Voice control generally visually impaired people supported so that calls can be made without looking at the display. But the technology is of course capable of much more than "just" control by language. What can be benefited from and which brands To make such offers available, we have researched more closely and list the currently most conspicuous products.

The example of David Plummer

39-year-old British wildlife photographer David Plummer has Parkinson's disease. This hitherto incurable neurodegenerative disease is known, for example, from Muhammad Ali, George WH Bush and Robin Williams. David Plummer is a well-known wildlife photographer. And he was that even before he was diagnosed with the disease. His eye for the situation, light and angle are unique.

But now that his body is unintentionally and constantly shaking, it is very difficult to take photos. Nevertheless, impressive pictures of the man can always be found on social networks. How does he do that? Technology helped him with this. Huawei's P20 Pro is equipped with such a strong artificial intelligence that it analyzes hand movements and uses this pattern to stabilize the image. This simply erases the ghost effect from the images and people like Plummer can continue to pursue their hobby undisturbed: "Thanks to modern technology, there are moments when I simply forget about Parkinson's."

Healthy sleep can also be promoted

Sleep research has long been a major area of science. This is no different today, but knowledge about healthy sleep has increased enormously. Not least by tracking movements during sleep. This can be used to determine when a person is in a deep sleep, in a so-called NREM phase (Non Rapid Eye Movement). Once a pattern of sleep has been recorded, a suitable gadget can determine when it is wisest to go to bed.

Nokia provides such a tool. "Nokia Sleep", a small sleeping mat with a cable, about the size of an A4 piece of paper. It records the movements during sleep and can therefore analyze exactly when the person goes into deep sleep by default and when not. Accordingly, it is recommended to go to bed shortly before such a deep sleep phase in order to be able to sleep directly. As an addition, it is also possible for the coffee machine to be switched on when you get up, but that is only as a small side information.

dot watch

One of the most beautiful and at the same time most meaningful Gadgets in this area is the dot watch. The smart watch does not have a small touchscreen, but has 30 small blind points that can be retracted or extended as required. This enables blind people not only to read the time, but also to communicate about it. Vibration informs about calls.

The Dot Watch can be paired with the cell phone via Bluetooth and even displays messages. The ingenious thing: The technical interface is disclosed by the manufacturer. And as we know it from open source programs like WordPress, I'm sure that an incredible performance will be extracted from what is actually such a simple invention. Incidentally, the watch is said to cost around 300 euros.

As you can see, technology isn't just for entertainment. It can also be of real benefit to people with disabilities in particular. An asset to humanity.
